That's the problem; she's always just kind of there. ESPer stories are always about Satori's search for respect/Utsuho's search for friends/Koishi's search for phallus/whatever else. Rin's always the bridesmaid, she's never the bride.

Even a story like Chirei De, which is fantastic, is about literally everyone except for her. This is despite her being one of the two major catalysts for change, as well has her having the story pretty much told from her point of view.

Who is Rin Kaenbyou? What adventures does she like to have? What does she like/dislike? Who does she like/dislike? Who likes/dislikes her? We don't know any of these things beyond the bare bones ZUN has given us, because everyone always focuses on the other three and shoehorns her in as a stock supporting character that never does anything meaningful.

Orin is a lewd waterfall I will spend my life meditating under, tempering both my mind and body.

I disagree with your assessment of Chirei De, by the way. The first part of Chirei De is ostensibly about Satori and Koishi's personal drama, but that doesn't come under scrutiny until the second half. The first part deals primarily with Orin's impotence in the face of uncontrollable events, and her desire to aid her family. In this initial narrative, she is the main character, while Satori and Koishi are goals; however, because many of Rin's worries centered on Satori and Koishi, it appears as though they are the main characters even though Rin's emotions are the one's that we're receiving.

Now, she is sort of dropped for the rest of the story, but I think that's because she'd already played her part. I think that all of them received a lot of characterization and attention dedicated to them.

We knew all of this already, though. We see Utsuho get adventures with the Moriya Shrine, with Tenshi, or with whatever strangers make for good straightman foils to her comedic naivety. We see Koishi get adventures with Flandre and Nue (and Marisa). We see Satori seeking out Reimu or having fun with Remilia or seeking philosophical advice from Yuugi. Who does Rin get? What does she do when she gets them?

I can see where you're coming from, but I think Rin's change served more to set up the drama of Utsuho's change than to showcase her as her own character. We got her transformation with its cute leadup and then that was that (and like you said, she is sort of dropped for the rest of the story), but there's both internal and external drama surrounding Utsuho's - internal with the injury, external because the audience knows it isn't complete and there's more to come.

Just the way they were played out showcases the difference - Rin's came around with a silly catty wish and no fanfare, while Utsuho got the dramatic presentations and deep conversations. Now obviously Utsuho's transformation was always going to involve three gods because that's how it was, but that just means Rin's could have been a little more flashy and special than it was.
