I have, but only managed some normal 1CCs.

I played all the Touhou shooting games. I don't like the fighting games. I have only read one issue of one manga, WaHH 17.

I've played most of the games but I've never beaten any of them.

1cc normal all the natural numbered shooting games a couple of months ago, did a few extras and phantasm. Haven't played in a month or two now.

I like Touhou, but I haven't played in almost two weeks since my first Hard EoSD 1cc. I've been focusing too much on arcade shooters lately,

I've gotten close to doing a 1cc of TD, it's just Seiga's Curvy Lasers that get me and Soga's Arrow brainfuckery.
Anyone have tips for those? I tend to freak out and waste half my lives and or bombs.

They are too hard for me and the art is much worse than all the fanart I saw.

Used to play a lot. Ten Desires left me underwhelmed and I've barely played since. Not even sure I want to give DDC a shot

I used to be able to 1cc PCB and Imperishable night on hard, but I haven't played touhou games since Mountain of Faith, so I probably couldn't do that anymore. Are the newer games any good?

I've finished every game on normal at least. I really don't care all that much about the games though. Never beat a single extra stage besides in POFV.

I've 1cc'd all of the main series games (including Fairy Wars) except for Highly Responsive to Prayers on Hard, and have gotten to Eirin on Lunatic. I've beaten every Extra mode except for the PC98 games, and I've beaten Phantasm as well. I also 1cc'd Ten Desires on normal on my first run through the full game, the day of release. I haven't fully beaten Shoot the Bullet or Double Spoiler. I'm not that good at the fighting games, but I've 1cc'd them all as well. I also like finding silly safe spots in the danmaku.

I played a lot, they are fun.
But I'm bad, I can only beat them on normal mode and using all the continues.

1CC on normal is the best I've done for a few games before getting bored and moving on. I've played more fan games than the official ones. Even though I like shooters, I don't really care for Touhou all that much.

I play a lot of STGs and have only dabbled in Touhou. The games are fun, but how do I get into the expanded fandom? What are some essential mangas or whatever to better grasp the story and characters?

I watched the anime many years ago but just haven't got around to the games yet

At least play every integer game from 6-13, then you'll know nearly every character used in fandom and actually get every joke. Silent Sinner in Blue and Wild and Horned Hermit are the most famous offical manga, and Bomber Grape (who is totally the dude who made Daily Lives of High School Boys) is the best 2hu doujin writer.

I would not recommend SSIB to anyone unless you want to scare them away from Touhou. It's like recommending Zelda's Adventure to someone who wants to get into Zelda.

I've only played EoSD and I can't even get past Patchy on normal. For what it's worth I've read every piece of dialogue in the series and all the canon materials to compensate for my inability to not suck at dodging bullets.

I'd recommend practicing with imperishable night or ten desires. The practice spellcard mode really helps with clearing the games.

Focus mode causes that inverted color shape around your character. Touch the falling spirits with that shape and they will activate. Activated spirits, like fairies, help power you up and help to attack the enemy.

I suck at 2hu, I played esod and can't get past patchy on normal, played pcb on normal somehow got to the last level and died after about a minute, I know what focus is, I know what hit boxes are, and I know its about," the patterns"
