There's a bunch to manage, sure, but not everything has to be 100% optimal all the time. That's only necessary for some boss fights really. Also grats OP, I'll be at the expansion soon enough! Going to try to get it done with my characters in the low 60's, and afterwards switch to weekend so I can get some goddamn advanced exclusive character-specific items.

This is assuming all main game locations are immediately accessible in the expansion. If that isn't the case I might go ahead and switch.

I'm on the second sister in stage 20, and while she cant kill me when i have my spells up i seem to stay alive until my whole party runs out of mana/bombs then i die slowly. I mean, I was just dicking around and not having any heal or revive is pretty dumb, but she took so much damage so fast it didn't matter. She's weak to blunt and water so using Byakuren to enwater mokou and then letting volcanos rip destroys her. Also patchy for water damage and field nonsense. Just blast her weaknesses, really.

Oh, and your level sounds about right. Is Sakuya even doing anything in your party? That spot may be better served with Byakuren or more water damage. Synth some gear maybe? My Mokou had a good fist. Lastly be sure someone has reraise on them when the boss dies.

You should be able to finish the pre-expansion final boss at lv60 below.

As for tips against the boss, she's weak to blunt and water damage, she also has pretty good defense stats so you may want to have Byakuren or some other girl that can debuff her defenses. She also uses a move that can pretty much wipe your whole party before or after dying. I kinda forgot which, but I'm pretty sure she will trigger it as some kinda parting gift to you. Protecting your party with Alice's Little Legion should help you get through it.

Thanks for the advice, my patchy deals pretty low damage for some reason. I dont think i have terrible gear on her but my water spells are dealing 1-2k usually which isnt going too fast, and mokou can deal upwards of 5k with a volcano. Just keep messing with switches until it's open.

If a switch seemingly blocks the route you used to get to the spot you're currently at in the picture, then that's probably the right switch and you need to navigate around to that point again through other means to go through the no open gate.

That stage is complete horseshit. I don't remember the exact way to do it but you'll sometimes have to hit a switch and then enter the second stage from a different location to make progress. I think once you get past the part you're at it gets a bit easier, good luck.

Here it is, as promised(if anyone was still curious). As you can see, I actually almost one-partied all three phases because of an early party swap needed due to terrible RNG. I have no idea why I kept going, but I'm glad I did! It was actually the first time getting Mokou to phase 3. I did not expect her hitting for 6k-11k on every turn, and I did not expect Youmu to crit for 15k+ with multiple double attacks happening as well. Admittedly I did kind of overlevel the fight(81 on those four minus Mokou), but I'm confident I could have actually done it at around 70 with this "tactic".

Congrats on completing the main game without using Satori and Byakuren. That's pretty much a challenge run thinking about it. You really should give them a proper playthrough eventually though.

I completed the main game at around 40-60 hours, not that I remember too clearly.

I played while intensely spoiling myself and avoiding grinding to the point I was underleveled for every single dungeon. I had to grind Mokou just to get Fujiyama Volcano for needle maid.

I think I reached the actual Gorgon barrier around 40 hours then grinded a lot since everyone was still 50 and below except for Alice at 53. I then grinded until everyone was 60-70 then beat the final boss's second and third phases first try without kusanagi or medoroa. Aya, Satori, and Reimu working in tandem is virtually impossible to damage in any significant way which is what I had for the first party. Youmu and Byakuren combined pretty much wrecked the final phase effortlessly.

I was attempting to farm a high ribbon, but I never got one to drop until after beating the final boss which is where I think most of the grinding came from. That and attempting to kill one of every miniboss. Only managed around half of them before just going for the final boss.

By "intensely spoiling" yourself, I assume you checked tactics etc. on the wiki. For shame! I admittedly used the wiki on a couple of fights(like Tenshi), and I suppose I owe a lot to the people in these threads for giving me pointers on a large amount of the battles too!

Devil of Decline had a neat system with the shikigami system, but it essentially removed a lot of the character from the touhous.

Their abilities depended on the shikigamis you used and the actual character didn't matter nearly as much.

In GoS, the growth trees are really nice. Especially since you can respec whenever and however. Every character feels unique in terms of ability and leaving any of them out hurts your party as a whole.

Here are more damaging skills to add to this list:
Dark Giga Flare - Multi-target MYS bomb. It's like an Energy Bomb with 3x more power. Has a pretty ugly cool down, but its element is rarely resisted. Good for burst MYS damage on a group of enemies.

Cosmic Liner - Pretty much a single target version of Dark Giga Flare. Can be reduced to 0 cool down. Ignores Reflect.

Punish the Judgment - Multi-target LGT bomb. It deals around the same damage as Medoroa at max light land on enemies with neutral resists to light. Can be reduced to 0 cool down.

Endurance dungeon. Gets you the 2 best accessories in the game. Can't run from any fight in that dungeon and using a healing circle will cause monsters to respawn. Didn't make the other one yet, but it's essentially protection against any sort of status effects.

Cirno is pretty much the worst character in the game anyway. She is worse than Satori at inflicting Death. All her spells only deal water damage. She is as frail as it gets and dies if you have her anywhere near fire. She can have lots of health regen, but since she can't take a hit it's pointless. All she can do is inflict freeze, which is something Sakuya's best sword can do as well.

I almost never use her. Most of my characters are at level 95+ while Cirno is stuck at 81.

It seems like you're ignoring the recommended character quest order on the wiki or haven't seen it.

You should probably get Nitori and Mokou now for some of your proper DPS back.

They're 2nd and 3rd on the list for easiest to do past Cirno.

You have Sanae now so it should be fairly trivial to get them. Her fight is incredibly trivial if those helpers don't work right. I remember in earlier versions it was possible to make it so she couldn't summon them at all.

Remilia sucks against bosses since she lacks strong single target moves and has long cooldowns on some of her stronger moves. Can deal with random trash though and has probably the weirdest Last Word in the game. Reisen has one of the highest damage outputs in the game against anything that can be debuffed. She gets extra Slayer for every debuff and permament effect for many her moves. Can inflict pretty much every debuff and most permaments herself too. Make sure to set her growth so that her moves only dispel good effects or she will cripple her own damage output and ruin your setups.

How hard are the bosses in the expansion? Is it the same feeling as when you play through the main game and you have a blast trying to figure out how to beat the bosses? Also have to consider the fact that the main game got us used to the required tactics.

Man, I still remember my amazing fight with Kanako and Suwako. The one time in my life I ever decided to use an instant death move on a boss for the lols (since Konpaku Flash came up by chance) would be the one boss that has a weakness to it.

I had overall less trouble with them compared to some base game bosses. They still require actual tactics instead of spamming random moves though. Final Boss is a real bitch, having insanely high evade. Another boss gets a perfect barrier nullifying everything that doesn't ignore or pierce it.

It helps that you can get much better equipment for your characters, since quests reward you with the materials you need.

Alright, the best I've gotten is like 2/5 of the 3rd form's HP. Think it's time to pack it in and grind some out of the low 60's so it's not AS luck-based. The team I've had the most success with is:

Alice, Marisa, Sanae, Satori, Sakuya
Aya

Youmu, Mokou, Reimu, Byakuren, Patchy
Nitori

I tried switching Sanae and Reimu but I think nullifying magic for a turn trumps reviving. and the damage output of team 1 is too shit without Sanae. Regardless if I have to revive I lose my buffs and I might as well F12. I guess I could switch Reimu and Alice. I'm not sure if Alice could save the party if that raving gulf of greek shit decides to use AoE magic 3 times in one turn. Maybe with the right shield.

Also what do you guys think of Asura vs. Manyawhatever for single targets? Kinda quirky that the latter's spells tend to hit a variable amount of times at low power. I'm not considering Deva because the tree doesn't give defensive boosts.

Alice is meant for the last phase. She is pretty much insurance for if a drain element gets through and her little legion also protects characters from vortex.

Aya, Reimu, and Satori are pretty much all you need to protect yourself during phase 1 assuming two crocs.

Regarding DPS, it depends on what stuff you have. If you have Kusanagi then Mokou's good for the third phase, but Youmu with Doujigiri is still sufficient otherwise if you can survive long enough for 3 properly buffed Paschals.

If you really want Mokou for third phase then learn Mederoa from Ambivalence to actually make Satori replace Mokou's damage for the 1st phase as well.

My characters ranged from 60-70 when I beat the final boss and I didn't have Kusanagi or Mederoa.

Aya, Mokou, Reimu, Marisa, Satori, and Sakuya(commander) for the first party. Alice, Youmu, Byakuren, Sanae, Patchouli, and Nitori(commander) for the second one. Hinotori Skydance for both parties.

For the first phase I simply got Mokou's Fujiyama Volcano's cooldown to 0 and had her hit Lithos with volcanos whenever she was up, had Satori use starlight barrier and leaf shield on Aya, and Reimu barrier when appropriate while Marisa attacked with the appropriate magic as well as Satori when she wasn't putting up barriers. If I had mederoa then the 1st phase would've been incredibly consistent for me, but I didn't at the time.

With Alice defending and tanking, Sanae buffing our defenses, Patchouli voiding land and Byakuren buffing Youmu as she paschaled, the final form went down on my very first try against it. Patchouli had one of her armors, Byakuren had her 6th tier scroll, Sanae had a few accessories, Youmu had a ribbon, and Alice had rainbow greaves and more accessories so my party pretty much took negligible damage the entire fight from the final phase. I had to little legion and revive Alice at the beginning of the third phase due to a filled land gauge, but past that there weren't any real bumps.

It's very fun. I've never had to grind though you may need to for the final boss. It's more about strategy. Some dungeons can be tedious because there are so many mobs and there will be the occasional stupid puzzle It also runs a bit long, but it's overall one of the best JRPGs I've played. Cool. I actually had to make the switch with phase 1 at ~1/4 HP, but once I got to phase 3 my DPS was so nuts that disadvantage didn't matter. Yeah in phase one lithos can charm and stone bomb you still. I've been using private square to skip when she bomb refills, but thats onlu up some of the time, and it leaves sakuya's low damage while croc sister heals most of it back.

I've used a few different setups for phase three, but the boss has only healed a few separate attempts, so i havent been thinking about it much, I havent gotten her close enough that a heal would have made a difference yet.

Yeah, res buffs are nearly useless against Lithos. You need Reimu's barrier. Satori's starlight barrier is really nice in that fight because it covers your ass if Anastasis decides to use her bomb after Lithos does. If they do this two turns in a row though you're fucked because everything will be on cooldown.

I don't have the experience to be certain but that does sound a bit off. Is team 2 fully buffed by the time you enter phase 3? Are Mokou and Youmu equipped with foreign god-slaying weapons? Formation? Between Nitori's bomb and Alice's covering there should be only a 1 turn vulnerable spot in your defenses. On off turns you should probably cover Youmu. Nitori should have bomb increasing items along with Mokou. Buff Youmu's accuracy. Generally buff with Byakuren if you can and leave revival to Sanae. The former's buffs are about 1.5 times more potent. Mystic resisting items can protect against a stray minus. That's all that comes to mind at the moment, hope it helps.

I always knew Byakuren heavily beat Sanae buff wise, but it seems Satori is stronger than Byakuren debuff wise if you actually spec her for it. Or maybe it was because I forgot to put points into Byakuren's debuff tree before all my attempts to kill this thing.

You may want to replace Remi with Reimu. 1st turn, use Reimu barrier, most of the time, it's physical attack on the first turn. 2nd turn, Little Legion with Reimu increasing Light land. 3rd turn, Aya + private square. With Byakuren buffing Sakuya with light sword and her PATK buff, Sakuya would normally be able to simply take out Flandre fairly fast under private square with the vyse sword as that also slays.

Since you're not using Byakuren, you might be better off switching Remilia for somebody also using a transcendent slaying weapon like Nitori with her Shade. The Kusanagi while powerful doesn't work as well since Flandre has 50% slash resistance. Reimu helping out with barriers would also help your survivability significantly as well as an appropriate commander like Mokou or Nitori.

Sakuya's ACC is always really shitty for some reason. Every single melee character besides her hits really reliably, but Sakuya starts feeling like she's been affected by some sort of permanent ACC debuff once you hit the late game. And that's with a headshot goggles accessory.

It's especially apparent with her skills. Other characters get increased accuracy when using a skill, but Sakuya gets reduced accuracy on hers it feels like.

Also I've always wondered what the perfect maid ability on her Maid Arts growth tree implies.

I tried the Mokou method twice and the spell just fails. If this method ever worked, it doesn't on the up-to-date version. Once I tried using Reimu's barrier, I managed to get raise dead in less than 20 minutes.

In my opinion, no. Character-specific materials aren't very abundant and neither are the special materials for the weapons.
I make weapons if they give a very good bonus or are important, like Sakuya's sword with slayers, Nitori's gun with slayers, Marisa's broom with +2 Bombs (the next one is +20% cast speed, so I didn't make it and saved for the one after that), etc.

I retract my last statement. This boss is harder than the final boss was, if only because of the immensely retarded layout of the fight. The only way for Patchy to damage him is Starburst Inflation, and it only does about 1.5k per hit. This also leads to no bombs and no mana by the end. Reimu is only there to increase Light land, and she does it poorly. Sakuya does okay damage, but to sustain this damage she needs to use mana, which means she has none left by the time the guy dies.

What a bland boss. Also bump limit.

These new characters are neat. Reisen with Kusanagi is terrifying and her mechanic is generally fun to play around with. Remi's attack is insane and all that evade is pretty cool. How exactly does Star of David work though? "Inflicts damage proportional to HP" is very vague. Seems to do good damage in any case.
