There are tons of Volks Stores in Tokyo. Shinjuku, Ikebukuro, Harajuku and Akiba off the top of my head. There are Mandarake which sell wigs and dolls, not so much clothes but some LE character outfits. Then there's the Azone shop, Littleworld, Dollk, Dollce, and Parabox.

Truth is, you're not technically allowed to take pictures inside the Volks store. They usually have a place set up for doll photos in whatever store you go to, and you can only take pictures there. I don't know why, seems silly to me. Of the Volks stores I've been to, in Seoul, Ikebukuro, Akibahara, Shhibuya and Osaka, they have tons of doll clothes but a small portion of that is DD. Seoul for example, at any one time, had no more than 10 DD outfits. All stores seem to sell the shimapan sets, as well as some of that $40 'lingerebox' stuff. From there they will probably have... the maid outfit, a schoolgirl uniform, maybe from toheart? And some other outfits that are essentially limited outfits that did not sell. Some are character outfits, some are outfit collection outfits. I picked up the 'Sailor Tulle Skirt Set' in Osaka as well as one of the outfits that came out with Mariko last year. If you have a chance, go to the Volks store in Akiba, because it has the most DD stuff of anywhere. They have tons of DDs on display and even sold second-hand DD things and custom eyes.

It's a bit hit or miss. One shirt I bought from them had like all of its buttons come loose after trying it on once, luckily it's not a big deal to sew those on better. The pantyhose visible in the last pic has also started tearing from one of the seams, but it's always under clothing anyways. But then again, some other items have been brilliant, I think they themselves source all the clothes from different manufacturers and just sell them under one webstore. Sizing might be a bit of an issue since DD:s are slimmer than the SD dolls most of the clothes are made for and boobs might also be a problem with an L-bust/dynamite girl.

They don't have anything in stock, so it takes them usually around 2 weeks to process the order, and once it's shipped it's been very quick to arrive for me. The free air mail they often offer is a very nice plus, as well!

There has been a slight boycott mentality in the DD community though, since they've copied a few Volks outfits and are selling them as original designs, but I'm personally not particularly bothered by that.

Well, that doesn't include shipping. Taobaofocus's shipping was incredibly high, a lot higher than when I used Taobaonow. Usually it's about $20-30, but it was almost $40 with TBF. Of course these orders all had dolls in them and were sent EMS. I'd say it's a safe bet on $20 shipping so I'd suggest collecting things to order and making one big expensive-ass order.

Sounds about right. My girl (>>11171937) took around 400 euros to put together, but there was a lot of trial and error. I got the body from yahoo!japan auctions for dirt cheap - around 300 euros but that also included two heads and an L bust part which I sold separately, getting quite a bit back. I bought an unpainted 04 head and sent it for a custom faceup and then the first wig and eyes I bought weren't very good so I had to re-buy better ones as well. And then of course a lot of clothes, so now she's become quite a bit more expensive, but with careful planning a custom one should be doable for around 500!

Don't spray the vinyl or the doll. If you want to perfume her, spray the wig when it's off the doll. Perfumes contain alcohol that can damage the face paint and vinyl. They also are usually dyed and that could probably stain or something.

That's a scent that's made in the plastic, I'm sure. Some doll companies offer that. It's a different chemical makeup. Either way, if you dowse her wig well she'll smell however you want her. At one point, each of my dolls had a different scent that made them feel more life-like.

but for actually looking at techniques/styles, I reccomend looking up youtube videos.

Some tips to keep in mind:
1) THIN YER PAINTS
2) Go from light to dark (ie. light outline of eye shape, darker lines to refine eyelashes)

I have several SD13 outfits from TTYA. Tops are fine, you'll have no problems. Both skirts and pants/shorts are a tight fit, but they do fit. They do restrict leg movement somewhat, but it isn't a problem for most natural poses.

Do you not like the standard head molds or just the default Volks faceups for them? Yahoo!japan has a lot of custom faceups for the standard heads, prices vary from under $100 to $500 for the most popular artists. There's also western faceup artists, I bought a blank head for my girl >>11171947 and sent that to a faceup artist in Germany.

If you want a limited head mold entirely, then the best bet would be to buy an entire doll from Mandarake etc. and then just sell off the parts you don't need (outfit, wig, eyes).

That's an entirely custom one, so several thousands of dollars. The head has been modified a lot (not even sure what she's based on!), the soft bust piece is very expensive and so forth.

Mine >>11171937 was about $500-ish. I bought a pre-owned DD2 body, a DDH-04 head and had it painted, then had to do a bit of trial and error with eyes and wigs before finding ones that I liked - that's about the cheapest you can get one, since even the pre-owned standard models tend to be more expensive. But having her done just the way you want is of course always more satisfactory!

The little one looks like an sqlab miyuki, which isn't that expensive, only 90 usd.

The bigger one seems like it has the volks e05 ears, but I'm not 100% certain. Not too sure about the facemold in general either.

Yep, she's a Tamaki, I think with some obitsu body based on the joints in some pictures. Tamaki's not a very good starter doll since along with the original Saber, Saber Lily and Sasara, she's one of the most expensive ones - probably close to $3000 _if_ you even manage to find one for sale :<

If you like the mature and sexy look of Tamaki, DDH-05 might be a good cheaper option. Despite having a number designation, the 05 is not a standard head though so it's not sold as readily as the other ones. Volks' default faceup for the 05 isn't very good either, but there's occasionally some pretty ones on yahoo!japan.

I shoot my stuff (>>11246473) with a Canon 5D Mark II, usually the 40mm f/2.8 STM lens and a Speedlite EX 430 II flash. I like the full frame since it gives a nice very shallow depth of field at large apertures, but any basic DSLR with a fast prime lens (35mm f/1.8, 50mm f/1.8) should do the job and not cost that much. The smaller, mirrorless ones are also pretty popular in Japan, some of the best doll shooters IMO use Sony NEX ones.

Get a Fuji X-E1 or X-M1, and a Minolta MC-Rokkor 58mm 1.2 with an Adapter, and you've got a killer setup for taking dreamlike pictures of dolls.
Sony Nex is fine too, the controls kind of suck, but if the video mode is much better.
Full frame DSLR would be your best bet if you have the money to splurge, although adopting some old lenses is a pain in the ass.
I would get the Minolta 1.2 either way, because it's a dream.
