Oh, it's not all that bad. It's not EVERY day, and Yukari gaps her a twenty often enough to keep her stocked with cheap tea.

Her day to day schedule consists largely of tidying up the shrine, drinking tea, and grumbling mildly. Oh, and I suppose that she performs the odd religious ritual when she really needs to, and trains whenever someone badgers her enough. It's just that no-one ever shows that part of her life because it'd be really, really boring.

Yeah, I sort of reconsidered a bit after I finished typing. I mean, games like Animal Crossing or Harvest Moon can be soothing, as is watching clouds/birds/whatever. Please, do not feel sympathy towards the real evil mastermind of Gensokyo. Reimu has been killing people for no apparent reason since Touhou 1.

Reimu reminds me of a Government employee, who deals with justice when parts the administration decide to start taking things for themselves. She has to stop groups of powerful entities, for little in the way of reward or thanks. She does this simply because it is her job, to do the impossible every time she is called on. What kind of person would this task produce?

While Reimu seems to be in a thankless position, there's no canon evidence that she's struggling, financially or mentally.
While fanon likes to be all "Donations please, I have to eat dirt", you need to take a step back into canon, and look at the real Reimu who is closer to "Damn, I wish I had actual human visitors and not a two-bit witch, a cheating living god or a dog of the devil."

She does seem to have a rather serious position, some kind of Gensokyo balance keeper, but so far it's not been stressful.

I am so tired of people trying to give almost every single Touhou a grimdark or tragic story, especially when there is hardly any canon evidence to support it. Do you hate happy carefree characters? Reimu might be involved in various incidents but she can easily complete them due to her being a shrine maiden. Plus, I don't think that someone she becomes friends and holds a tea party at her shrine with at the end of most games could be considered a real threat to her or even Gensokyo.

Eh, food isn't that important really. I was a fatty and then I moved out. I bought a flat but I lost my job and was poor for a long time. Eventually I was surviving on just one meal a day. You can like ultra-grimdark nonsense along with light-and-fluffy as well. I enjoyed Osana Reimu because it had a good sense of humor and was really sweet even despite the giant pile of human bones. I mean, I also like Happy Flame Time, who makes stuff about as light and fluffy as it gets. One does not preclude the other.

I didn't play the games, but from what I gathered from canon she had a very bad life. Her mother was killed by her best friend, Rumia, and she had her memory erased. No wonder she is so fucked up in the head.
