To be blunt, it's challenging. At 27 I still encounter issues with older Japanese, but it's a rarity now. A lot of it is just like moving anywhere new, people need to just get used to you around them, and a little more so simply because you're a foreigner. However, if you're fluent, and you have your citizenship, then it's pretty easy.

I have a dual citizenship myself, as an American, because I was born in Okinawa. It was extremely challenging to keep, however.

Not that difficult if you are not American.

I don't believe there's any correct answer. It depends on what perspective you're looking at it from. Whilst intelligence certainly is not required for survival, and many organisms survive much better than us e.g bacteria, they cannot secure their own future. They can't look ahead and predict what will keep them alive for the longest and hold off their instincts for the now in order to save for the future. They're completely at the mercy of nature.
