Outside of the dive system (which had finally found a good balance between depth and character development), it felt a lot like a train wreck.

1) Battles. It was like they attempted to make their own battle engine. It was clunky, slow, and boring.
2) Purge. there was NO reason for that. Pointless fanservice detracts from a game not based on fanservice (re: the first two games in the series).
3) The 145° shift in tone. AT1 & 2 were serious games with silly elements thrown in on the side (like most jRPGs). For example, the 'installer ports' weren't really a major thing in AT2, and the whole dive system was basically optional in both of the first games. That completely reversed in AT3, focusing strongly on how 'He who masters the art of stripping controls the flow of battle'.

Another example, resolving with a civil war and trying to unify the people so they could revitalize their failing world where major points of AT2. AT1 primarily focused on keeping the tower from falling apart . AT3? Turning enemies into cakes, installing a new port in each of the girls, and how good you were at disrobing your Reyvateil. Oh, and some plot rushed at the end of the story to tie things together I guess.

I can understand games that have the party 'stumble into the plot' instead of knowing it from the start (which is a fine mechanic), but that's not what AT3 did. It dicked around for most of the game and slapped some stuff together that looked like a plot so as to give some closure, kinda.

Huh, I must've missed that part of AT 1's battle system. Granted Mir[/sage] wasn't a particularly difficult battle. Do you mean the counter-attack mechanic?

Personally, I thought AT II's was far more exploitable, because of the damage negation/reduction. The attack timing was pretty easy to remember after a few rounds, making getting anything less than 'perfects' difficult. Also, the giant loli-cannon was another major kicker, because it could basically wipe anything out with a good hit. I kinda wish I could've faced Raki in a super-battle, but I have the PS2 version so it crashes on me after a few turns.

AT3 was also pretty icky for a battle system, but that's another topic.

The crystals you could get off S-rank equipment were rather OP. Stack the good ones, and you could RIP AND TEAR damn near anything.

But yeah, the final fights weren't at all hard either. Only hard fight I've had in an AT game has been Raki, just because the time limit's rather tight.

I was kidna disappointed in the lack of difficult battles, to be honest. I like it when a game, on occasion (not like Dark Souls), throws you a hard-as-shit boss. Like in Tales of Graces. That was awesome. It gives me a reason to use all these fancy items and stuff.

Ah, I see. To be honest, it was pretty meh, but I was thinking specifically about the battle system.

It's like it was their first attempt at making a 3d real-time battle system, and it was really clunky. Granted, attacking wasn't suppose to be a really big thing anyways, but it was still pretty awkward. The movements were kinda sluggish and inaccurate, and they sucked at moving (not to comment on the AI).

Then there's the whole purge deal, but yeah.

They had at least fixed the dive levels in 3, allowing you to get down to stage 9 (think, might've been 8) before cutting you off. That way your non-path reyvateil wasn't useless in battle (AT 2), but you didn't 'clear' her (AT 1). Also, IIRC, diving was generally less important in AT 3 anyways.

Oh, and that art. the 3d characters and environment.... took a lot of 'getting use to'. Not sure of they made that from scratch or not, but they were pretty 'simple' designs and shapes.

So, basically, you're not missing too much with AT3.

Honestly, the only reason I play the games is the characters, worldbuilding, and music. I've never been fond of the art, gameplay, or stories. But I'm gonna have to get a PS3 for Drakengard 3, so I'll be getting around to AT2 sooner or later anyways.

Fair enough. I'm with you on the world-building and music, that was most of the charm in it for me as well. It's pretty rare to find games actually creating their own languages, let alone having people sing in them. I was a little disappointed that they backed that off in AT3, but I have to guess they didn't have time to prep the voice actors or something.

The characters have always been pretty meh, personally. Granted, the only game where I went through everyone's route was AT 2, but I never had much interest in going back for 1 or 3. That's really just a general thing though, I'm pretty meh about most VN and anime characters as well.
