Before I came to 4chan. (from around 2004-2006) I frequented the adultswim boards. Mostly the incoherent babbling section. There was lots of roleplay there, stuff like *glomps you* etc. I spent a lot of time there. There were these things called "IB marriages" for a while and I managed to be married to a pretty cute girl. I was pretty popular.

They put a stop to roleplaying on incoherent babbling and it just wen't down hill from there.

I lurked on a couple of art sites (some oekaki which is dead now and deviantArt), Neopets, and that's about it. I couldn't really do all that much on the internet as I used library computers until I was 13. I found this site about a month or two of getting my own, and now here we are fives years later and my browsing habits haven't changed all that much. Just Japanese art sites rather than English, still go on Neopets and a forum about to it, and /jp/ too of course.

4chan seems like the sort of site you discover when you're young and "grow up" with it. I know a lot of people who started coming here when they were 13 - 15 years old and just stuck with it for a good number of years, or still come here regularly.
It's very easy to find your way here through other sites and word of mouth and all. 4chan isn't exactly some deep underground site, it's just a few centimetres under the ground with bits sticking out indicating where your underage ass should dig.

But seriously, if you read the experiences of people that lurked pre-2006 4chan they'll all tell you they were afraid of posting because they'd be insulted and called faggots (!) if their post seemed idiotic and out of place. Now you can shit out all you want and if someone criticizes your post you have a wide range of tools to dismiss them:

- Say you don't care, that you do something with a bad reputation on the board and that you won't leave. Bonus points if you finish with "u mad?". They'll be the minority plus you're anonymous.

I'm watching Forbidden Science at the moment. There's some bad acting, but it's actually an enjoyable show, even without the sex.

Those porn websites that hosted 10 second preview clips, and sites that hosted game patches and mods. I was only allowed to use the family computer for an hour a day, so the rest of the time I spent playing online games.

By the time I started stealing wi-fi, I had already been visiting 4chan and used my new freedom to spend all day on it.
