But that's the problem. Whites are the majority, so blacks, Asians, etc. are going to be unfairly represented overall. If 200 whites and 5 blacks apply for 100 positions, then chances are you're going to end up with 100 whites, or maybe just 1 or 2 blacks.

One of the tenets of "Americanism" includes equality of opportunity, but this obviously isn't the case when we look at minority groups. tl;dr AA would not be necessary if the field wasn't skewed to begin with. In using only scores without respect to other factors, it reinforces the biases because the scores are often reflective of the biases themselves. It's not "fair", but it's less unfair than the alternative.

Where I live, if you get high enough grades public universities are free, and they're better than private universities, so we don't have this problem. There we go. America also has the problem of states and municipalities deciding the education policies and funds (e.g. Texas pushing "Creation Science"). This means that poor areas are practically guaranteed substandard education. Black kids stay in gang-ridden public schools.

Minorities can supposedly get more federal benefits (loans and grants). I'm not sure if that falls into AA. I've heard that it works in terms of "points". If you fall into certain categories, you get extra points added which provide an advantage when decisions are made. Maybe preference for scholarships and whatnot.
