It's probably a case of "these characters are new and unestablished, so they suck". I used to hate the cast of UFO back when it came out. Give it time.

The one thing that annoys me is that he keeps piling characters onto the setting. We already have a really big cast, if we keep getting more characters we'll have to start losing some. Except for the characters featured in the demo, the Ten Desires cast did absolutely nothing for me. Nor did the music.

DDC, in my opinion, is a return to form as far as characters are concerned, but the music is still lackluster compared to older games.

ZUN really should quit while he's ahead. The written works are as good as ever but the games have been getting steadily worse since MoF.

If he wants to keep making games, he ought to start a new series.

I think only the actual gameplay has really suffered, largely because of the inclusion of some annoying system mechanics which broke some of the later games.

In terms of music, cast, or gameplay? I'll admit that the UFO and trance mechanics are hit or miss, even though I liked the UFOs, but I think that the music is as solid as ever, and I really enjoyed the way that the cast of 12 and 13 have been fleshed out in HM and SoPM. Also, why would you pick MoF as the cutoff point when it introduced the wonky bombs as shot power phase and IN had last words/multiple routes/.
