11042326 No.11042326 [Reply] [Original]

Aya Shameimaru, after a long day of work, flew back to Youkai Mountain, soaring across the sky at Mach 1 (340.29 m/s) headed 16° north of east with respect to the air current, which is blowing at 47.3 m/s 39° north of west with respect to the ground.

What is Aya's speed and direction with respect to the ground?

This is just basic trig-physics, right? Just find the resultant vector, which is the hypotenuse of a triangle whose legs are the other two vectors. The other number you're looking for is the direction, and you can find the angle of directional difference by taking the inverse tangent of one of the legs over the other.

I say I think because I'm not entirely sure if I'm handling the 'with respect to the air current' thing right. Wow am I rusty. thanks for practice.

The convective granules near the solar surface have the typical size of about
10^3 km and typical velocity of about 1 km/s^-1. Make an estimate of the coefficient of turbulent diffusion. Sunspots are structures on the solar surface with sizes of about 10^4 km. If sunpots decay due to turbulent diffusion, make an estimate of the lifetime of a sunspot.

Second, the tengu was originally a dog-meteor so yes they're probably not very worried about heat.

So do you just basically do vector addition? In that case, she would be flying 315.5 ms^-1 at 23.1° north of east.

Detailed working:

Let us simplify the workings of the problem by assuming Aya is flying at a 16 degree incline to the x-axis in a 2D coordinate system. The wind is blowing in the opposite direction at 39 degrees, giving 141 degree inclanation to the x-axis.

The problem is solved by considering the movement of Aya and the movement of the wind as vectors, separating them into their x and y components and then adding the components to get the resultant vector for Aya.

Aya:
v = 340.29 ms^-1
α = 16 degrees

v_x = v * cos 16
v_y = v * sin 16

Wind:
w = 47.3 ms^-1
θ = 180 - 39 = 141 degrees

w_x = v * cos 141
w_y = v * sin 141

The resultant vector for Aya then has the following x and y components:

u_x = v_x + w_x
u_y = v_y + w_y

The magnitude of the vector, i.e. Aya's net speed is then:

u = sqrt(u_x^2 + u_y^2) approx. 315.5 ms^-1

The resultant angle, γ, can be calculated as:

tan γ = u_y / u_x
γ = arctan(u_y / u_x) approx. 23.1°
