ESRB added this to their site for Konosora earlier today

>Content Descriptors: Mild Language, Suggestive Themes

>Rating Summary: This is a role-playing game in which players follow the story of Aoi, a male character who returns to his hometown to care for an all-female dormitory. As the storyline unfolds, players make choices that affect interactions between specific characters. Some still-frame cutscenes depict female characters dressed in low-cut outfits and bikinis that expose large amounts of cleavage; these still-frame images also depict close-up views of their chests and pelvic areas. Some scenes contain suggestive dialogue (e.g., “She puts her hands on her voluptuous breasts and lifts them” and “[H]er ample chest is pushing against me... I have no choice but to experience this for myself.”). In one extended sequence, female characters in a bath compare each others' bust sizes (e.g., “Most of the calories go to her boobs and her brain”). The word “bastard” can be heard in the dialogue.

We always talk around here about English translations. Did you know that Haruki Murakami recently published his own translation to the Japanese of The Great Gatsby?

I know this has nothing to do with VNs, but there's a great article the wrote about translation (scribd.com/doc/137342703/Haruki-Murakami-on-The-Great-Gatsby):

>I had decided to wait until I was sixty to translate The Great Gatsby for a number of reasons. For one thing, I figured (or hoped) that by thatage my skill would have improved to the point where I could do the job properly. [...] I had placed Gatsby securely on my kamidana, the high shelf that serves as a household shrine to the Shinto gods, and then lived my life glancing up at it from time to time. For some strange reason, however, it became harder and harder to wait till my sixtieth birthday. Restlessly, my eyes sought the book in the shrine more and more often until I finally had to give in. So, three years ahead of schedule, I sat down to work on this translation.

>> No.11015801 [DELETED]

>In the case of The Great Gatsby, I found that none of the translations I looked at satisfied me, regardless of their quality. Inevitably, I would think, This feels a bit (or a lot!) different from the Gatsby I know. I must hasten to add that this reaction was personal, based on the image I carried in my mind, and had nothing at all to do with objective—or academic— critical assessments of the works at hand, such evaluations being beyond my power anyway. All I could do was scratch my head at how wide the gap was between “my Gatsby” and the impression I received from the translations—this again from a purely subjective perspective. [...] Put differently, I translated Gatsby at an extremely personal level.

>Unavoidably, Japanese translations have stumbled over some of the fine points of his novel, while others have been entirely omitted. As they say, a delicate wine doesn’t travel well. Try as one may, it will lose at least a portion of its aroma, mellowness, and texture en route. The only answer, I guess, is to read a work such as Gatsby in the original; yet that is more easily said than done. The beauty of Fitzgerald’s fluent, elastic prose lies in his ability to alter tone, pattern, and rhythm to create infinitesimal shifts in atmosphere.

>> No.11015806 [DELETED]

And the last one:

>To be perfectly honest, a work that achieves this stylistic level is too difficult for a person with limited English to comprehend—only a truly advanced reader is able to see what he is really up to. This is why, if I may be allowed to exaggerate in a somewhat high-handed manner, it is my impression that Japanese readers have never truly appreciated The Great Gatsby.

>Painstakingly, I examined Gatsby’s solid trunk and branches and dissected its beautiful leaves. When necessary, however, I stepped back to take a broader view, forsaking a word-by-word approach. Had I gone about translating Gatsby any other way, I wouldn’t have been able to convey the power of Fitzgerald’s prose. To fully grasp its essence, I had to plunge into its heart—then and only then could his writing burst into bloom.

I recommend reading the whole thing.

The point is that they posted about 20 lines and a quarter of them had exceedingly basic mistakes pretty much showing that it's just edited machine translation, such as thinking that 九割六分 means "90% in six minutes." Why did vndb all of a sudden decide to delete Dungeon & Dolls from its database?
http://vndb.org/v2035

It's ridiculous. It just makes the database ugly and incomplete.
So it lists the Majority of Alice Soft's catalogue, but with some arbitrary bits every here and there just deleted.
And then they have Alice's Cottage 7 in the database, which was a package of a few titles that were one and the same package. In other words it was pretty much one title.
But only half the package is mentioned now.

So you look at the Alice's Cottage 7, it appears to be a package, but it won't show you/link you the whole package. So if you don't know Alice's Cottage 7 actually contains, you wouldn't know from VNDB.
What a joke of an informative database.

In the 'releases' section of the VN entry, it'll list the package it came from (rather than the VN name as you'd expect with a stand-alone release). If you click the release you'll go to the release page, which shows that it's part of a package with multiple games. You can see the same thing at Dra+KoI's entry, for example.

>>11031519
Problem with things like these are that you can endlessly debate about what is a VN and what isn't a VN. For that reason VNDB has clear guidelines on what gets an entry and what doesn't, and those guidelines are enforced strictly whenever someone points out a questionable entry. The alternative is to just let everybody post whatever the hell they want, but that would only end in disaster.

No it isn't, it's not that black and white.
Any company that creates about 70-80% VNs and creates a spin off dungeon crawler that is arguably a VN and full of characters from her other VNs should have these games displayed. If only for completionist reasons and to keep fans informed.

It's what we would call opinions, because games like these can be defended as both VNs or sRPGs.

Which, once again, means there is basis to keep the game there from the VNDB guidelines stand point; not that I care about the VNDB guidelines, I think it's much more important to have Alice Soft's VN related releases displayed on the same site.

You're not arguing against the possibility of Dungeon & Dolls being a VN, are you? Dungeons & Dolls contains VN content, however small; so arguing from that stand point it should, in the roughest of terms, be considered a VN according to VNDB guidelines.

His problem is that an SRPG is a turn-based strategy game with heavy RPG elements (Fire Emblem, Final Fantasy Tactics, etc). Dungeons & Dolls just isn't an SRPG in any way.

As for VNDB's VN criteria:
>1. When to add a visual novel
>To be included in this database, a game needs to use the novel narrative consistently for telling its story. Examples include describing visuals, events, character actions or thoughts.
>This storytelling needs to be uninterrupted* for a significant length and employing one of the known Visual Novel presentation methods such as ADV, NVL and their variations.
>*Uninterrupted by gameplay sequences, not by choices or simple map movement.

>>11033232
>that is arguably a VN
That's the entire problem. VNDB is a pretty huge database, with a small moderation team. They just don't have the time for long discussions on whether non-notable title X is a VN or not.

>It's ridiculous to just cut out certain releases, but leave others that are just as arguable in.
If there's an entry that's not a VN according to the VNDB guidelines, report it in that thread. People add a lot of non-VNs, and the staff just can't know about them until someone points out they're not VNs.

>> No.11033936

>>11033923

> If the gameplay aspect is more or even equal to the reading aspect, I wouldn't really consider it a visual novel

Applying that logic a lot of VNs on VNDB currently are not visual novels.

I cannot for the life of me understand why Dolls & Dungeons (Which has a relation with other visual novels developed by Alice Soft) would not be considered a visual novel while games like Raidy, which is a game that has no relation whatsoever with other games that could be considered visual novels, are considered visual novels.

Yet this has absolutely nothing to do with the argument of Dungeons & Dolls being a visual novel or not.

Dungeons & Dolls not being a SRPG does not disqualify Dungeons & Dolls from being a visual novel. I hate to point this out but this is a logical fallacy at its finest.

>>11033935

>That's the entire problem. VNDB is a pretty huge database, with a small moderation team. They just don't have the time for long discussions on whether non-notable title X is a VN or not.

This I completely understand. Which is also why I posted >>11031519 yesterday.
I completely disagree with their criteria, because I believe that removing half of a developers game catalogue from VNDB because those games are ''arguably'' visual novels is completely retarded.

If Alice Soft was a company that created only games that could ''arguably'' be considered visual novels I would atleast understand the decision not to include the developer at all.

The current state of the Alice Soft developers VNDB page simply tickles my autism like no tomorrow.

If you have at least $50 a month of disposable income, then it's just a matter of priorities. I personally find it more important to support creators that create things I like or do things I want to support, than to buy some luxury item I don't really need anyways. I'm someone entirely different and I definitely sympathize with you. If you have a physical disability and others will not employ you, I advise you to consider acquiring some marketable skills that are within your means.

For example, creating websites for other people. It can be a fun hobby and there are quite a few people and organizations seeking websites with little or no expertise. If you learn a basic content management system, you can tweak it to meet their needs with little or no investment.

For example, doing freelance design work for other people. Coding things for other people. Creating art commissions for other people.

I do not know exactly what your skills are or what you would like to do, but I would like you to use your disability money for your own survival, and as a gateway of some kind back towards productive work.
