But of course, she's all for us and loves all humans, right? That's what she says, right? We should believe her, right? Let's drink every word from her lips. She originally was a happy buddhist monk. Her brother's death hit her hard and she became afraid of dying, so she strayed from the path to enlightenment in order to find a way to elongate her own life (some black magic of buddhism). Her use of this magic depended on youkai, so she started sefishly protecting them while pretending to be a great youkai hunter so humans wouldn't catch on to her.
After doing this for some time, she realized that youkai were unjustly oppressed by humans, and her motive changed from self-preservation to equal liberty for youkai. When she stopped pretending to be a youkai hunter and the humans noticed that she was able to use magic, they got scared and sealed her in Makai. After being stuck there for a thousand years, she is unhappy to see that humans still don't have any respect for youkai. Despite this, and being imprisoned, she does not attack, nor sanction attacks by her followers, on humans.

Okay, so here's the tally:
Miko: Was an all-around great ruler that gave his/her (?) people happiness and the ability to flourish. I'm pretty sure there was a war to make Buddhism the country's religion, but I may be wrong. Also, wars just kind of happened in that day and age. Lied to her people about what religion she was practicing, allowing her to keep immortality for herself. Didn't really change anything, because her people had still been given happiness, so I'm not sure what the problem there was except for hypocrisy and harmless greed. Gets sealed during immortality ritual. Comes to Gensokyo; advocates living like a hermit and being a leader/ hoper for humanity.
Overall: Some blemishes, but pretty good track record. Very charismatic; tends to be showy and thus entertaining. Knows her way around people and courts as a leader. Even if she doesn't always tell the truth, she makes her people happy, except for those butthurt monks. Kinda ticked off at Buddhism, but that's on the backburner to more important issues.

If she was better about advocating /human/ rights instead of just focusing on the youkai, she would make a damn good human leader. Very nice overall, but still feels that humans overbear the youkai, which is kind of impossible. Slightly naive, but the heart is there. Working towards peace between the 2 as best she can. Loyal followers, but has trouble reaching out to people she disagrees with.

I tried to mostly leave out my own opinion in my lengthy synopsis, but between the two, I bow only to the Crown Prince. Byakuren is nice /now/ and all, but she's still prejudice as all hell against humans, even if she's "trying" *cough* to reach out. Miko is willing to put differences aside for the greater good, and after her initial upset, has moved on to focus on improving people's lives in Gensokyo. She may not /like/ youkai, but she doesn't have to. She knows her goal is making people happy (and maybe putting her on a pedestal), and she works towards that.

I've always liked Miko since she's one of the strongest beings in Gensokyo that didn't get her power from some otherworldly being or consequence nor by being such a creature herself. She's very much human, and the only one like her is Marisa. Strong through her own faith and desire to protect her charges, add that to the fact she's also one of the few who will give a damn about a nobody human and that makes her a very attractive character in my eyes. I have a soft spot for mind readers too.

I dont really know until which point Zun sticks with the historical figure of Shotoku Taishi but i'll try to add a little context about how Shotoku and his historical context was supposed to be.

Buddhism didnt arrive at Japan(i think it was called Yamato at that time) because prince Shotoku brought it. It was slowly introduced into Japan by foreigners, specially from Korea and China. This introduction was opposed by some factions defending Shinto religion like the Mononobe clan or the Nakatomimi clan(they later became the Fujiwara clan, yes, that Fujiwara) and defended by the Soga clan. The conflict between pro and anti Buddhism factions was something that began before Shotoku was born. Miko says that Futo used to burn buddhist temples because Mononobe no Moriya burnt some buddhist temples, so thats where the pyromaniac Futo came from.

Shotoku was in the imperial family and was something like a chinese otaku. He went to China and became a huge supporter of taoim, buddhism, confucianism and chinese culture in general in Japan. Besides he was related to the Soga clan. So he was involved in the defeat of the Mononobe clan and later he became a supporter of Buddhism building temples, statues and all that shit. But this doesnt mean that Shotoku fought against Shinto, it means that the defeat of the anti-Buddhism faction allowed the buddhist to spread across Japan.

Zun apparently is telling us that while he supported Buddhism he was a taoist in the inside and was searching for inmortality. The whole revenge against buddhism is probably related to a statue of Shotoku that was hidden and has a nail in the head and a very angry expression. I dont know why else would he change a pro buddhism into an anti-buddhism.

Therefore she/he was a legendary ruler with a huge fascination over chinese culture and a pretty deep involment in the development of Japan. This goes with both the touhou canon and the historical canon.

You really need to read up on how gods work in Touhou.

The reason Byakuren protects youkai is because, unlike humans, Youkai are only created to fulfill one particular purpose.

Usually that purpose is 'Induce fear in the hearts of humans'. They, similarly to gods, are created when humans believe in them. Basically, humans are their creators.

However, should a youkai fail to keep up its purpose, it will CEASE TO EXIST. So, youkai who stop being feared by humans despite it being their purpose will eventually fade from thought and die.

It takes a long time though and younger youkai are often unaware of such purposes, so they seem to get a kind of grace time until they mature enough to uphold the reason for their existence. (Ex: Rumia, fear of darkness).

But all in all, they will die if they don't do what the humans dreamed they could do. Byakuren sympathisizes with youkai because they barely have a choice in the matter, they are created, must do what they were created for, and get hated for it. Despite it being the humans who made them that way.

So Byakuren tries to help youkai create their own 'purpose for existing'. No one else gave them the option, so it's a bit like counseling for villains who have only ever known villainy for their entire lives.

This way, they can not vanish from memory and be able to choose their own paths in life.

Also, she began to fear death after her bro died. So she basically found the solution that Marisa will eventually have to face herself sometime in the future, The 'No need to eat/sleep' spell and 'Eternal youth' spell, which is basically her just cross classing buddhist monk into magician (which is available to any human who is iwlling to learn).

Anyways, so we have a girl who went into buddhism with her brother, faced the spirit of death and got scared. Began acting selfishly, then found a new purpose among her lies and became a truly kind person.

So yes, she was a bit of a chiken before, but so was Miko, making Futo test the immortality charm before she did it herself.

I still can't come to like most of the taoists even 2 years later, and it's not because I don't like new characters. I love Kokoro and the 14 cast already and it's just been weeks.

And that's the thing. I'd be much more forgiving of the Taoists if they were sorry for their crimes, but they're just so lacking in regret even over obvious sins like betrayal that it's hard to not see them as smug assholes.

To be honest I never cared about the rest of Buddhist team besides occasionally being moe or sexy in doujins. But the Taoist cast is perhaps the first case where each stage boss gives me further reason to dislike them.

Murasa at least has the excuse that it is the purpose of her existence as a drowning ghost youkai, where as Seiga, Futo, and Miko all did what they did without any coercion or need, so their crimes are forced to reflect on their personality.

Of Futo, Tojiko, and Miko, I consider Futo to be the greatest sinner, given how she betrayed and tricked Tojiko, essentially murdering her, yet at the same time recognize her bravery in facing death and loyalty to her sovereign. Miko is a bit tricky. She's hypocritical, in that she used Buddhism to consolidate and centralize the power of the state while pursuing esoteric Taoist practices, and cowardly, in that she sent Futo to die for her, but she also did a great amount of good for her people and reigned justly and ably. Actually, Byakuren doesn't dislike humans or even not care about them. It states that she's friendly with everyone but the fact of the matter is, humans in general don't like her because she's friendly with youkai.

It's one of the reasons why the human village also doesn't really visit Reimu's shrine, she's a youkai magnet (however, they know she's also a youkai exterminator).

She's not out to kill you, she's out to try and help the guys who want to kill you. And she's doing that to try and get them to do other things than kill you because that's barely even allowed in Gensokyo anymore.
