i've kept up with the wood burning, getting better although shading is a bitch. Its really fun but scary as well because they take a long time (this one took me around 8hours) and you know that if you make one mistake you've pretty much ruined the whole thing. All i have left to do before this one is finished is add her name and the love live title on it, then stain it cherry or mahogany, havnt decided yet. Either way this one is going to japan in a week as a gift to one of my friends over there whos very into love live. The funny things is i never really keep them... I've done around 6 now, and always end up giving them away. Theres only one i've kept so far. Maybe ill do some 2hus later on.

also to the people waiting for burnings from me from the gift threads many weeks ago - im working on them now, i promise i didnt forget about you guys, i've just been busy lately ;_;

Pic a light source or sources and work from that.

Don't abuse the soft brush, it makes your shading look blurry/smudged and amateur.

Use references of light on real objects/people.

Understand the form you are drawing and where light hits.

When picking shades, don't pic darker values of the same hue, it looks bad.

Not him but he means to make shadows a "colder" variation of the base color and lights a "warmer" variation of the base color. Can also be done the other way around but occurs far less. It makes the picture seem more "dynamic". I hope that makes sense. Don't overdo it through. Also cute pic.

Don't do this.
All of the colors of the right are different saturations and values of the same hue, it looks bad.
Especially for skin!

If you look at this random anime drawing, you'll see a lot of the colors shift hues to shade. Use the color picker on them to see what I mean.

A few notes. You switch Hotel Yankee and Yankee Hotel around. Simple mistake, but a bit distracting. I think the story would benefit if you changed the opening paragraph. As it is it feels a bit too much like Twilight Zone. You could go for that since it fits the setting in a way, but you'd have to go into more detail about the Navigator's mental state and thought process. You could also try setting it as the crewmembers joking around about how dull and routine like their job is, compared to the glory of the missions of the Great Generation before them, followed by the grim realization that any mission excitement on board means holocaust. Here's an account of life as missile silo crew http://www.wired.com/rawfile/2010/02/gallery-silo-3/all/ which goes a bit more into detail on how you cope with the mission by focusing on routine maintenance and such.
I would also recommend at least mentioning that the spec could be a foo fighter of the war days, and that the prefab psych hut evaluation carried the very real threat of being section 8. These were terms more used during WWII, but the early stages of the Cold War were very much about bored crews wishing they had the clear threats of the previous conflicts.
I liked the rhythmic prose of the dreams, but I'd go a bit more in detail and how they start to break the clear barriers of reality. First it's just a weird dream that leaves a lingering scent of iron and copper when he wakes up, by the end it's a complete phase shift after just winking. It's an interesting progression but it's not very noticeable by the dry narrative. Navigator barely reacts to all of these.

Speaking of dry narrative, you have a chance here to seize the setting and frame it as a military debriefing. Reports have a specific language that can serve to highlight the alien nature and wrongness that is watching little girls in a pre-industrial eastern bubble nation.

I liked it. I did half-expect the blond psych lady to be Yukari though.

>> No.10999751

>>10999473
You touched on a number of points that I strongly agree with. Upon finishing the story, I did notice that what came out sounds a bit like a Twilight Zone episode. I also regret the passive role of the navigator in the story, and considered amending that by telling the story through transcripts of the sessions, as per your suggestion, but ran out of time for a self-imposed deadline of three weeks. Plus, the sessions would put the focus more on why he keeps seeing little girls with tremendous power, which while would be an interesting topic, was a bit beyond the scope of what I intended to do with the story.

I would consider doing something with the sessions, though.

i am /k/ and that doesnt even bother me in the slightest, infact i love the idea of chen dual weilding hip-fired autos and purging the secondaries in the name of murdercube. For a rough drawing like that is perfectly fine. if he was trying to do a legit touhou/gun pic and added fine detail to the guns then yea, but for a sketch type drawing like that who fucking cares? Picture is fine and amusing as it is.
how do u know thats a mag and not a foregrip? maybe shes using a bullpup and the mags are behind her arms. maybe shes using a calico (they have cylindrical mags that sit behind the gun) or some sort of AR in 5.7.

actually those do kind of look like SBR or pistol 5.7ARs with the standard frontsight and maybe a MBUS rear thats just put down at the moment because chen is too busy being yukari's little friend.

tl;dr - the pic is fine as it is and the artist should be proud. stop being such a pompus jerk and dissing someone else because its not 100% accurate. if you want better do it yourself.

well im pretty pissed. Tried staining it earlier today to finish it off, only to find that the plaque was made of 2 different woods (or some really low quality bits) and absorbed the stain in an uneven and horrible way. Whats worse is that this was supposed to be a gift and now i need to find 16hrs before Monday to redo it. Going to hit it with some stain remover tomorrow and see if its at all salvageable, but most likely ill have to do the whole thing again.

so i guess a word of advice to anyone looking to get into any creative hobby involving finishing wood is test stain the back of the wood before you completely destroy all your hard work. Normally for plaques you can leave the back unfinished, but when dealing with something you're spending alot of time on its better to be safe and check to make sure your board was manufactured properly. I've done alot of wood staining and never once have i had a piece of wood that was manufactured improperly so either i've been lucky or this is a horrible bit of bad luck.

It sucks, but sometimes projects dont get the happy ending they deserve. hopefully in the nesxt 48hrs ill have a successful version to show you guys.

Learn to construct, you shouldn't be spending hours on a simple sketch if its only a character.

If that's what's going on, you're doing it wrong and its because you don't really know what you're doing.

If its a whole scene with other characters, props, background etc then its understandable that it takes time, not much you can do about that except get more experience.

Also try doing thumbnails, that really helps to just pour out all your ideas until you got something you want to work on.

Looking for a little help /jp/sies.

Obviously quite in progress and nowhere near done, but I honest to god cannot do faces; I'm generally just kind of bad with skin in general.

Anyone have advice or resources (video/tutorials etc) to help teach a pleb like myself to draw in a generic animu face without it going full retard?

My worst problem is with eyes - not making good looking eyes, but with making decent eyes that don't appear alien to the face. Welcoming anything warmly.

This is really helpful, but are there any tutorials/guides on how to figure out where the shadows fall on human subjects instead of just simple objects?

When I look at a lot of other peoples artwork on Pixiv I can't always understand how the shadows fall where they do on the character, especially from self-shadows. I also can't always tell where the main light source is coming from.

>> No.11017693

>>11017393
You have two options:
a) copy other artists until you figure out how to make it look good without considering actual 3D structure of the face. Requires a LOT of sense and possibly being Japanese to make it look good.
b) what >>11017424 says. Requires some anatomy knowledge and practice, but it's a more logical approach.

Both approaches can work, but people attempting the first and failing is why there are so many western artists sucking so hard at drawing Japanese-style even after years of practice.

>> No.11017706

>>11017643
>re there any tutorials/guides on how to figure out where the shadows fall on human subjects instead of just simple objects?
Of course not for the simple reason is that it depends entirely on the light source, you can't expect to find a tutorial from every possible angle do you?

You'll find generic tutorials but this is not enough, you gotta understand it so you're not restricted to any specific angles.

What you can do is reference photos from real life and study where the light hits.

Start with simple 3D shapes and shadows, construct a human body with that and apply the same shadow technique.

You need to learn to draw first

>> No.11018236

Simple 3D shapes don't have any self-cast shadows though. I already know how to do that, and knowing that much isn't enough to make anything look even remotely good.

>> No.11018310 [DELETED]

>>11018236
stepping stones, you gotta know how a shape or object projects it's shadow on a simple surface before you can understand how bits of face cast shadow on itself. You also have to learn how contours and shapes of the face affect shadow and simple shapes with contur can do this. THINK of the face in terms of simple shapes and you can get the picture. You start off with the simple then work your way up to the more complex.

DO NOT just copy what you see others doing in final work, all you will end up doing is mimicking what you see and not understanding what is going on and will eventually lead to a wall or failure.

In general to all who ask is there a tut to do this or that, NO there is not. Tuts are all general because being specific to one thing is not what a tut is for it is to give you fundamental focus. There is no easy fix or quick solution, it is not math where you just follow the steps.

I'm working on a web VN engine/framework. I'm trying to figure out how the editing should work.

Are flowcharts user-friendly? Or should I go the Ren'Py way of typing everything manually?

(not my image, but an example of how it could look if done by flowcharts)

>> No.11030594

I'm doing that too!

Flowcharts are very user friendly, look at Twine or Inform. They are mostly for interactive fiction but the same rules apply to VNs.

I'm curious though, what technologies are you using to make it?

It goes without saying but use REST or something then either just return JSON or offer a choice between JSON and XML.

>> No.11031488

>>11031460
Why would you want to use XML?

The whole point behind using JSON is that it's the native object format of JavaScript, making loading and storing data trivial.

>> No.11031517

>>11031488
Because you will have a service that delivers data. You can arbitrarily decide to not support XML and force the use of JSON instead of letting people choose whatever fits their needs but that is up to you.

>> No.11031577

>>11031517
I'm not the anon who's using JSON but it sounds like he is NOT serving data. He's just using it to store information.

>> No.11031698

>>11031577
However you WILL serve data if you use something like REST to serve JSON.

There is just a very fine like between making something useful and extendable and making a "framework" which is hurr durr for making a shitty CMS or interactive website.

The basic concept of most AJAX functional or similar websites is the following:
- You have a webserver with all the basic things you would expect.
- You have some method of data storage such as a database.
- You use a service application or set of scripts to communicate between the database and anything else.
- You use a generic protocol such as REST for communicating with your service.
- You serve data requests in a generic representation format such as JSON or XML.
- You have webpages that parse your data for visualization and make requests to your service.

This is like "How Do Websites Work 101" so it's not that interesting. But it is useful because if you pay a little attention you will notice two things. Your logic or processing is independent of your data storage and visualization/UI. Your visualization/UI is independent of your data storage and also logic/processing.

Now, I know I was being unrealistic. I have more responsibility - a dear cat to feed, bills to pay off. I eat one full meal a day if I'm lucky; I'm very thankful that my relatives send me vitamins

In the case of paid music work, I'm getting a lot of real-time feedback from the client and tend to be more motivated and finish projects more often.

But when I'm left to hobby production, I have no direction, and spend too much time just on getting the sound design to match up with what I hear in my head, and not enough time actually composing, or putting together anything really pleasing to hear.

It comes off as incredibly arrogant when you're just a beginner with bad drawings and you add a watermark/signature. Something which you see all too much on DA.
It screams "oc do not steal" as if anyone even would.

Especially when you consider that a lot of professionals don't even sign/watermark.

That still doesn't stop people from stealing it without a second thought. It's a quirk, not theft prevention. They will still print it out in a hot minute, then sell it at their local convention pretending to be you. By the time people who have bought it realize, it will be too late, because it isn't an obvious indication of the original artist.

I know a lot of people don't like signatures, but there's definitely a reason for them once you pass a certain threshold of skill.

That doesn't particularly stop people, either. There's lots of people that steal Rella(http://www.pixiv.net/member.php?id=163536)) and 77gl's(http://www.pixiv.net/member.php?id=480448)) work. Because they have lots of contractors selling at events and are Chinese, and it's difficult to tell who isn't really connected with them.

Really, if you're good enough, signature or not, art theft is going to occur, but it does help somewhat to have every countermeasure possible.

>> No.11035032

That's true and I agree. Though, I take it as an opportunity for viral promotion. Die-hard fans of their art will seek out the real artist on their own, just like we do in this thread. So if attention is what these artists are looking for, they'll still get it. It might not be as much attention, but they'll still get it. It doesn't take much effort to search images online nowadays, granted, that the original artist has established themselves on various networks online.

However, if you treat it like a business, where profit might be of concern, then I can definitely see how you'd want to protect your works, or at least be acknowledged for it. Nonetheless, signatures and watermarks will not stop theft. Low resolution images could work, but that's not going to stop people from posting it online and claiming it their own, for what ever egotistic reason they have.

It should really be noted that as soon as people upload an image to the internet, you practically release ownership of that digital image, regardless of what countermeasures used. Simply judging by the nature of imageboards and even networks like pixiv, many people have already accepted that fact.

So why bother? Is it money? Recognition? If it doesn't stop you from drawing, would you still care?

In the end, it highly depends on the artist themselves, and what they want out of this.

If you want to appeal to the masses
-coding not required but available for advanced users

-tons of visual editing for things like transitions, special effects, screen effects (shaking, flashes etc)

-simple way to create the all the text related things, branching, flags etc

-must must run at a stable framerate and everything is smooth, there's no excuse for a laggy experience in something like a VN

This is where I question your choice in a web-based engine, the experience depends on the users's browser, people are reluctant to change
