Can you read on a computer?

Not just message boards or comics, but long stretches of nothing but words.

Same, actually.

It cost me quite a bit, though. Do Tokyopop only keep their books in print for a couple of years? It was difficult to find.

it's the NHK novel, it's an intentionally sloppy stream of consciousness from a detached (shut in) perspective. it's not by any means great literature, and the translation is pretty piss poor, but it's enjoyable in a campy way.

I spent £90 for it at the time, and even then, that was cheap compared to a few copies going for £150+.

What I can read on a computer: disjointed text like 4chan, shorter articles like news stories, manga*, etc.

For actual books, I have to have a physical copy. I feel that when I read on a computer screen I retain very little of what I've read. Also it strains my eyes and I like to have physical books. This applies to novels, light novels, short stories, non-fiction, etc. as well as textbooks, so I bought all of my books for learning Japanese.

*I can read manga on a computer without the problems I mentioned in the second paragraph, but I still prefer to buy it if I can. Generally if something is actually in print, I'd rather have a physical copy. It's not always practical, though.

Yes, but I'd rather not. Reading essays and books on a computer screen strains my eyes after a short while. I much prefer a tablet over a pc screen and a physical book over a tablet.

I hate how hard corporations are trying to push tablets and e-books, especially when all the benefits are undermined by things like DRM and backwards pricing schemes. How the fuck is it possible that a digital book is more expensive than a physical book?

I haven't read anything since the Pokemon movie book when it first came out in the year 2000.

I tried reading many things since then, but never managed to hold my concentration with anything more in-depth than visual novels and the occasional manga.

Recently, however, I decided to pick up the ASOIAF books after enjoying the Game of Thrones TV series, and I've almost finished the first book in the series. It'll be the first book I've read from start to finish in 13 years.

I'd advise doing something similar if you're interested in getting into reading. Read the book that your favourite film is based on or something. Better yet your favourite TV series, since being able to get ahead of the TV series and find out what happens in the story gives you motivation to keep at it. This is also how I got into manga; I was too impatient to wait for the second season of something or other, so I decided to read the manga instead since I liked the anime so much.
