Listening to /jp/ Music Compilation One and it's heart-warmingly good.
I don't know where it was released from though, I only picked it up from /rs/ with the lit magazine.

Just wanted to say thank you to the artists. This makes me feel incredibly guilty about slacking off---I haven't painted in half a year.

Dear Internet

It's been almost 24 hours, and I've yet to see any Cirno x Wakasagihime artwork despite them being in the same stage. I have searched Danbooru, pixiv, and every other otaku/weeaboo autistic site. Please, quickly, remedy my need for this.

Sincerely, KoG

Not that guy, but her hair and clothes has very strong highlights, which suggests strong direct lighting while the background has a very overcast lighting.

You should also work on separating the background from the foreground; depth isn't conveyed really well here.

What do you think about the shading on the hat? I somehow feel like it doesn't really fit with the rest. The lineart of the body and the shading are not done yet and I'm going to add a proper background later. I probably won't get to continue drawing for a week, so I decided to post it now.

I recommend doing research and reference from multiple places, do not use just one artist or "method" Look to artists like Hogarth for sense of movement etc. Even look at cartooning stuff they really give a sense of life to an image. Do not discount Loomis though, just use him as one of many to learn/steal from.

To start simply I would use simple shapes to build the human from with. This way you are working in volume and should be able to keep a sense of depth to the work. I think hogarth's dynamic figure drawing touches on this. He does go a bit further than simple spheres, cylinders, and rectangles. In time these shapes will help in structuring your work and should become automatic without drawing it. The importance of this is so you can visualize in 3d, to see how a shape crossing another will affect it in light and shadow. Not to mention the obvious of posing and foreshortening.

Do not let any method become a crutch.

While you grasp the technical side of anatomy or proportions, start learning to work in value. This should help with getting more punch into the painting. This will later work with the learning of volume since you can later on paint directly on canvas with value then flesh out detail without ever placing any guide lines.

Do many, many drawings. Avoid large time consuming projects. Having one or two is fine but in between crank out the doodles. All the large projects to is lock you down and slow advancement.

Do not get lost in the technicalities, dynamic form and flow are just as important as accuracy and detail. Google figure drawing you should find some good examples of FLAT drawings that have all the technical bits right but lack any sense of depth or reality.

Any critisism will be well received.

Lately I've been working on whatever passes my mind, I think it's the first time I've drawn tewi and I guess it doesn't look all that bad.

If someone can direct me to a good tutorial on how to color shit it will be really appreciated. (my coloring at best, it's very basic)

Start here then. http://academic.udayton.edu/tobyrush/theorypages/
Since you're playing guitar, you might want to check out the Creative Guitar Studio channel at YouTube. If you have a concept you don't understand, just search there, and chances are he's already covered it. There's also a lot of songwriting lessons in Ultimate-Guitar, but a lot are rubbish, and I'd only recommend it once you can tell treasure apart from trash.

I suggest you learn about key signatures first, then intervals. If you've understood intervals, you'll be able to do a lot of cool things. Chord constructions and chord movements, for example, stems from there, so if you're familiar with intervals, you'll be able to write mean riffs. Afterwards, it's just a matter of connecting riffs and passages to make a song. You could also do neat tricks like inversions or harmonies with it, but those comes later.

Once you've got intervals down, you can go ahead and listen to your favorite songs and understand the chord movements, expanding your aural library. So next time you want a sound that feels like X song, you can use chord movements familiar to you to write that.

If you reduce it enough, songs are just chord movements, usually moving around and then resolving to root. Most melodies can be reduced to chords as well. If you see it like this, it's logical seeing that to get better at songwriting - the practice of writing chord movements - you need to learn about chords themselves. Best of luck.

>Theory is just theory.
Indeed! In fact, that is the first thing you should realize when learning theory, lest you end up as a balding, stuck-up bourgeois ignoramus. Theory is, in its basest, just a way of saying how doing things this way is guaranteed to sound pleasant. It is not all-encompassing.

But, you've probably applied those concepts unconsciously, without being aware of them. For example, if your music has a "ground" note where it's played often and returned to as often, you've used the concept of tonality. If your music "fits" and "sounds nice," your notes are in key, and you've used the concept of key signatures and scales. I haven't heard any music in /jp/ that hasn't utilized music theory concepts. Yes, even denpa or lolicore.

Learning basic theory, for the most part, is just giving names to concepts you've subconsciously know, if you've been writing for a while.

It's not essential, but simply by being aware of these fundamentals, and applying them consciously, you will be able to make better songs. It gives you a solid ground, a guide on what to do and how to do it. I believe you might have been doing this intuitively. This feature also presents an opportunity; by breaking the rules outlined in theory, you can create new and exciting sounds. And you can't break the rules if you don't know them first.

unfortunately, I bought that book. It appealed to me as I frequent /fit/ as well. You could probably just read that excerpt and get the best of the book. It's riddled with typos including but not limited to the misspelling of one of the character's names in multiple instances. Grammatical and typographical errors abound, and the sense of parody is at no point subtle. Just save yourself the... what, three dollars he charges for an ebook copy?

Question for the more experienced artists here:

I've been drawing with a cheap Wacom tablet for a while and I need to move on to a better one. It can be on the more expensive side if it's worth the money. I'm also curious about the devices with integrated screens, would it be better if I get directly one of those?

If you can recommend me a nice one I'll appreciate it.

>> No.10977596

>>10977569
I would suggest a Wacom because you can sell it easily if you change your mind and it will keep its value for quite some time. As for tablets with monitor I would again suggest a Wacom because I heard that the alternatives will ither give you burned pixels within months or very bad colors. Tablets like those are over rated anyway even the most expensive will give you quite some lag and with normal tablets you can put it on your legs and be very comfortable. Jus get something big enaugh to use your sholder, small tablets will force you to draw with the wrist and you will end up chicken schratching.

This is my take on coloring. It's good that you already have a sketch. I usually fill in the flat colors first, with shadow areas. The light and shadow areas are important to define the shape and contour of the object. If this is done right, you can have a solid object with only light and shadow values. I'll blend and spread more value/color variance later, depending on the style I want to achieve. I don't always follow these rules, evidently in my landscapes.

Feet and hands really benefit for a solid grasp of anatomy if you want to make them attractive, even if you end up simplifying and over-exaggerating some features.

Find some drawfags/artists/whatever near you and have drawing sessions. If you cannot do this or are to uneasy, find a paint chat online and get a group together. Do work, do not sit there vomiting memes and make out doodles. Watch how others do things and use the chat. It is a lot easier for someone to explain something live than vs something as static as /jp or forums.

Mastery of anything is all individual. If self taught I have seen some advance in 3 months others take years. It all depends on drive and what you start with. none of the fast learners do so in a closet locked away from influence. If you learn bad habits early on or learn things in a lopsided manner you will likely struggle more on your own. But there is no defined this is what you should know at point A and this is what you know by point B. Even with proper training what you learn and when varies between teachers and schools.

You have your basics, learning volume (drawing simple shapes) values (lights to darks) With these you should learn lights to darks and how shadows interact with the objects and stuff around them. Then if your aim is figure drawing you have the technical aspects of it such as proportion foreshortening mass weight and volume Then how flesh lays and structure of underlying bits then observations on fabrics clothing and how it interacts with the body. All during this you learn differing ways to produce an image. Such as negative space, blind hand (drawing while looking at the subject only) gestural, various mediums etc.

Again the styles and methods of drawing will vary depending on who you talk to. Research for yourself do not expect some random anon to know what is best. What works for anon A will not necessarily work for anon B. This is where having others around you or at least in a live chat helps.

Most of all Effort, it is the only thing that allows you to progress, you cant read words have an epiphany and you are suddenly pro the next day.

Aside from few things, SFML for example gives you anything needed for a 2D games, as drawing methods etc..
Maybe I assumed wrong but isn't he making his own engine? From there you have to change the wheel a bit for your own convenience, but obviously I never meant to tell him to manipulate the framebuffer or something, waste of time development indeed.

I've actually used both, SFML2 up to the release had graphical glitches I couldn't solve (using code from the documentation and official examples).

HGE does just what I needed so I'm sticking to it for now..
It uses DX8 and hasn't been updated in a while, but it works as expected and it lets me focus on my game.

I have a hard time understanding how people can draw in that other way, first painting big shapes and then adding detail, using all kinds of different brushes.
I tried that once or twice and failed horribly. That's why everything drawn that way looks amazing to me.
I guess I'll give it a try again, even though I'm still unsure where to start. I guess some tutorial on painting techniques would be good. I do know perspective and some color theory already.
