sit, or lie in a quiet area, normally cross legged, but sometimes on my knees. I start by counting my breaths, at first each inhale and then each exhale. I normally count to ten or so, but sometimes as high as 16. I calm my mind as much as possible, but you cant force thoughts away, its like trying to hold a big block of Styrofoam underwater.
