Izayoi Sakuya

The maid who lives in the scarlet devil mansion.

Recently, she has found knives that will fly towards her enemies on there own. Since it's so much easier than throwing them herself, she enjoys using them. At that time, she hears rumors that youkai are running wild near the misty lake, and heads out to try her new daggers.

A youkai that lives in the human village. Her head can separate from her body, which is very convenient.

She is somewhat prideful, and does not open her heart to humans or youkai. It seems like she is always on guard.

This summer the religionists went on a rampage, but even as the humans and youkai got excited she could only look on disapprovingly at the craze as she lived a quiet life alone.

But this time, for some reason she got violent.

Imaizumi Kagerou
'Werewolf' (alternatively simply "wolf-woman")
Ability: Changes into a wolf on the full moon

She has a calm personality. Even when she becomes a wolf, she doesn't lose her composure.

Possibly because there are moon residents in the bamboo forest, many youkai related to the moon reside there.

Incidentally, she is a japanese wolf youkai. (Japanese wolves are extinct on the outside world.)

Since she doesn't like how she gets hairy on a full moon, she tries to live inconspicuously.

That was until Reimu heard that she was getting violent and defeated her.

I hope Stage 4 will be those items as little girls, either because they finally transformed into artifact spirits from mauling so many demons or because the new character's ability deals with animating objects. The usual separate-boss-for-each-character routine, everyone fights their own weapon.

That is true but the game doesn't really seem to have a "Japanese" focus. I'm definately no expert here, but mermaids, headless knights and werewolfs seem to be rather western elements. I mean EVERY new character is like that now. We had vampires and poltergeists in earlier games, too, but it wasn't a dominant feature. That's what I mean.

The Stage 2 boss is a nukekubi (omake.txt explicitly says rokurokubi, but then those can't detach their necks so I'm unsure), which are decidedly Asian (the nukekubi is Japanese, but there are a bunch of similar creatures strewn around in Southeast Asian) and are more like vampiric, disembodied heads than any sort of Dullahan. But yes, ZUN does seem to be going on a Western edge there, and perhaps that's why SDM is involved this time around.

Riddle me this, folks. Upon using the XP patch, the game starts fine and doesn't crash either... however, it's like a fucking shadowplay. Every sprite is blocked out by this fullscreen overlay. At first I thought it was just a strange effect at the start of stage 1, but then I realized the interface is covered up by it, too.

But it doesn't look like a typical performance problem, because then it wouldn't run for both of us at exactly 40fps.

Just beat the demo, I like DDC already. The graphics have been upped a notch, it's not as easy as TD, the music is guaranteed ZUN quality (reminds me of UFO but still fresh), the bosses are decent, the focus seems to be on scoring and some kind of combos(?), and I get to play with Sakuya.

I really like the atmosphere in the game - shiny and abstract and "neo-retro". Waiting anxiously for the full game.

The title screen music has the kind of progression as UFO Stage 1 theme, and the werewolf's theme starts with the same melody as U.N.Owen. Interesting.

If Sakuya was actually revealed to be a Lunarian, I would be disappointed. I dig the idea of a normal human having crazy control over time and space for some reason.

Touhou series has way too few human characters anyway.

Doesn't all the A shot feel stronger than their B counterpart? I haven't played Reimu yet, but both Marisa and Sakuya's A type felt much stronger and just better.

I wonder if this advantage will become problematic in the later stages. Weakening/changing shot types in the latter stages? Naahh, I can't really see Touhou as being that kind of game. I can't see any STG being that kind of game, in fact.

I don't think the "[...] is not a valid Win32 application." message is caused by it being a 64-bit PE file. The "xp patch" I acquired only has a single byte difference from the executable I acquired from nyaa.

It'd be more fun if it actually felt flamethrower-y mechanically - say, a shorter range but it keeps dealing fire damage for a couples of seconds after it stops hitting, or in an area around where it hits. As it is, it's just a typical thin-stream-of-bullets shot with unusually pretty graphics.

I noticed that too. I get 30fps right before the first icicle wave in stage 1. Its normal after that. Stage 2 is unplayable. Stage 3 is okay too. Well, this is a 'demo' after all, and I'm going to assume that everyone else had to put up with that as well.
