One time I had to describe a Chinese or Japanese man to the police and I didn't want to make assumptions about his nationality, so I said "Asian".
A week or two later the police phoned me and asked what kind of Asian. I told them maybe Chinese or Japanese, and they were annoyed because they thought I meant like Pakistani or Indian.
