Would /jp/ be interested in a browsable website for downloading albums or songs from the touhou lossy music torrent?

It could be set up for each album to be in an archive with its art and other material. Or however else /jp/ wants.

The server doesn't have enough space/bandwidth at the moment to support the lossless version unfortunately.

If you think you have the space, bandwidth and time, go for it, but you might think about simply letting youtube take the burden.

If there is a way to upload albums and download without worrying about seeding and whatnot that would be wonderful. Maybe if you could tag albums with the genre and include a search function that would be nice, maybe a page where people can add albums/etc they're looking for too.

Moderating seems like its gonna be a bit difficult if anyone can upload anything whenever, I guess if it has to be "approved" before appearing on the site that would work. Like I trust /jp/ and all, it's just outsiders might find it and upload rude things.

I wrote everything, it doesn't exactly index anything though. It's just listing files and then keeping track of what directories are clicked. Pretty fast to write it that way. Most of my time has been spent on encoding issues due to my own stupidity.

If it encounters mp3's it fires a function to generate an archive and make direct links to image and sound files on the server.

I'll GPL it when it looks less retarded.

You could use tags, too. Tag albums from C83 or R10, then we can have a page with all of the albums released at those respective events. And perhaps very general genre tags, and tag for vocal and instrumental albums. And maybe links to vgmdb/touhouwiki/artist site.

Thanks again for this.

Thank you for the suggestions /jp/!

I switched it to use soundmanager2, which works in more situations than straight html5 audio
Individual song download links download instead of opening as audio in the browser
Added Google's site search thing, it works pretty well actually. I'm fiddling with my own search though, not sure if it'll be used though
The ads on the google search thing are there because the no-ad version costs lotsa money, just install adblock
Fixed the sorting problems for the most part
Added link back to the list of albums
Fixed archiving not working (ran out of space)

Short term goals:
Add anchors for circle names (half-assed atm)
Show number of albums per circle
Add a way to view/list/sort by id3 tags
Some sort of queue that doesn't require registration

That's retarded, why would you use an extremely uncommon format (outside the *nix world at least), when you can just use ZIP with 0 compression. Almost all files related to music will already be compressed, so there's no point in wasting the CPU trying to figure out what should be compressed, only to save a few kB's at most.

Pretty much every archive program supports .tar.
xz is fairly new, but it's just another implementation of LZMA(2) and the library is public domain. No reason not to support it.

>> No.11111856

>>11111720
Just because it's supported by an archiving program doesn't mean it's not uncommon. I hardly ever see anything related to Windows (which is what you should assume the general public is using) using .tar files, and when I do, it's only for source code. ZIP is natively supported by Windows (and presumably OSX), and is extremely common, most people will at least know what it is. and how to open it, which probably can't be said about tar(.xz) files.
If the point of this site accessibility and usability, why wouldn't you use formats that everyone knows, and are almost guaranteed to be supported?

+1 for ZIP. Windows and Mac support it out of the box, which, how it was pointed out, is the best for the usability. User might not have rights to install (anything) any tar archive extractor on the machine.

As a side not, 7-zip, a free archive application for Windows, does support XZ.

I really don't care about what format is used, but ZIP has a big problem.

ZIP doesn't record the codepage in its metadata. This is a problem for Japanese material. If someone creates an archive in a computer set to Japanese and you open it up in a computer set to English (or viceversa) you'll get mojibake as filenames. I've had this happen with ZIPs uploaded by Chinese uploaders for example (SHIFT-JIS <-> GB18030).

Basically, ZIP is old and it sucks for inter-language operation.

And really, most (if not all) people who download music has an extraction program, and they are knowledgeable enough to know about RAR or 7z. Actually I never see people using Windows built-in extraction nowadays.

He said "lossy is not going to cut it", so I assumed he meant he wanted lossless.
In his case, based on his post, I assume he wants it for archiving purposes. It's nice to have the "original" files, that you can convert to whatever you want without any quality loss. Some people claim they can hear the difference between MP3 and lossless, but I don't really think it's realistically possible, at least at v2 and up, without listening VERY closely, on decently high-end audio systems.
There's really no point to lossless if you don't care about archiving or converting your own music, MP3 is fine for just listening.

Assuming you're actually a Japanese artist, do you actually have any proof that you lose any money? I HIGHLY doubt hardly anyone who listens to your music on YouTube would bother buying and importing your albums to wherever they live, so you're not losing any money. If anything, I would say the success of Japanese artists in the west is almost 100% due to piracy and sites like YouTube that allow easy sharing with a worldwide audience.
