Think of it from the perspective of a monk living hundreds of years ago that grew up in a rural village and is being trained by a zen master. If the zen master told him that he would become enlightened if you could answer this question then he would believe him completely and devote all of his time and thought to it.

He would come back with possible answers, the master would tell him that he's wrong, he would go back to thinking, etc. Eventually it fucks with the student's head to the point that all the confusion and doubt deconstructs the fundamental ways that he views the world and he starts thinking in that whole "Everything is one. Who is me? Am I tree? Who's the tree? Who is the goat? Does the wind blow the flag or do I blow the flag? Then again, all of that is wrong and yet it's correct too." monk way. Everything those people say is just confusing as hell.
