Today's koan:

When joshu was asked, "does a dog have buddha nature?" He replied "no".
What is the meaning of "no"?

>> No.10919178

>>10919169
It depends. In Polish, for example, it means "yeah".

Wait a second. He didn't replied "no" but "mu" which meant that whatever he answered it would be wrong.

Kuso thread. Let's discuss patchy instead.

Actually, it's a word in the English language.

Language speakers generally have an accepted definition of a word, otherwise language wouldn't work.

Within the context of this conversation. Remove it from its context and you simply have a symbol.

The meaning of a word can be ineffable. Like "Qi", "edgy", or "birds". What are birds? We just don't know.

But a symbol is worthless for communication unless both parties share the same definition of that word.

The meaning of the word "no" is whatever common definition joshu has with the person asking the question.

Also, a bit of Google searching suggests that the actual answer "mu" is a pun, since "mu" sounds similar to a dog bark.

In which case, no could simply be replaced with "woof."

>>10919241
You're talking in absolutes. Right and Wrong.

>But a symbol is worthless for communication unless both parties share the same definition of that word.

What about if it's some symbol with a pretty intuitive or straightforward meaning?

Drawing three lines in the sand could mean "3", no matter what planet you're from (as long as you see in the visible spectrum and count using natural numbers).

Then that symbol is worthwhile for communication since both parties share the same definition.

Whether or not it's worthwhile for communication is on a case-by-case basis between two parties.

A symbol will never be globally worthwhile for communication since anyone can decide what it means.

It's fairly intuitive from our perspective. We don't know the viewpoints and perspectives of alien races, however.

It's like what ZUN talks about when he says that Youkai don't have the same sets of motives and values that humans do. The gears inside their heads are simply so different as to seriously inhibit any comparison.

>>10919272
Eh, I'm not really at that stage yet. I must confess, I am still at "undergrad who is finding his spiritual side through a used copy of the Dao De Ching," so I'm most likely imprinting my own values on Zen and Daoism and the like.

>We don't know the viewpoints and perspectives of alien races, however.

But this isn't something like an exclamation point where it's an abstract symbol we've given a meaning. Even alien races must count the same way we do, even if they use a completely different numeral system. No matter how crazy or abstract alien races get, mathematics doesn't change from planet to planet.

I made several ZEN haiku today. This is straight from the depths of my soul.

Pussy ass NEETs don't scare me
Dare me
I still sip syrup while I sit by the river

Some otaku talk about me, but they not on my level
I'm sittin in the loft
My mind is on the cheddar

NEETs try to plot
I'm going all out
Hammers like the terminator

Fals NEETs out here smiling with the devil's grin
NEETs gettin traumatized
How the fuck we gonna win?

The guns I tote make cowboys jealous
The same line that I had forever
Pussy NEET

Crude words and inappropriate actions are best in all things, they dispel the posturing. Bowel movements are meditation in its purest form.

The monk who dances naked in the forest, howls with laughter, and shits himself or urinates without restraint is practicing meditation.
The monk who puts on his robe, solemnly sits down in front of the garden, and focuses on his breathing is just making a fool of himself.
