It's an activity favored by those who'd do anything to stay alive. When others focus on studying, the emo of the class focuses on trying to spark concern in others.

Nowadays when everyone has educated parents, everyone but the problem kid himself knows what's going on. Censorship and bullying are favored because they work. Studying for the future is difficult when you think about killing yourself all the time.

>> No.10912978

>>10912945
Even if the problem kid himself knows what's going on, he's in trouble because he can't help himself. It's entirely possible and normal to learn how to serve out appropriate replies and act on reason, but it won't get you very far unless you're actually so good that you can just tear through academics while ignoring everything and everyone.

>> No.10913024

High school lets people know how good they actually are. If they're desperate enough, they just want to flee from home at any cost. When they enter college, they try to make it through the courses studying 24/7. Because that's not possible, most of the time goes into fruitless idling and thinking what to do next.

This, of course, only makes their life story look even nastier. At this point, it's very easy to forget what fun means. When you actively reject hedonism, your thoughts start circling around the following two things:
- how to stay alive
- is it right to stay alive?

Morrowind hit a good balance for me in terms of playing a computer game vs. playing pretend. Sure, I could just run into that dungeon, walk outside, sleep, rinse and repeat, but that's not what my character would do. I mean, I could also open the console and give myself a full set of glass armour. But fuck that noise. Bradas Ivulas is going to trade between shops and be House Hlaalu's bitch and run away from big enemies because he's a real person in my mind who would do these things.

I don't want to simulate real life, although I've always been what pen-and-paper roleplayers would call a simulationist. I loved reading D&D manuals about how villages and terrain work.

It's just fun having some fantasy or sci-fi setting where pretty mundane stuff happens. People in Vvardenfell weren't saying, "Oh my gosh! You can use magic?!" because it's a pretty ordinary thing to them. Instead of fighting dragons, they were preoccupied with news about the Caldera Mining Company or the Empire abolishing the war tax. I love that sort of thing, it feels more real from an out-of-universe point of view.
