Everything in Korea is an act, the people are the most shallow and superficial people on earth, who would do everything to fit in. Looking at it objectively, Korea is an extremely shallow country. Every performer on Korean TV has had plastic surgery. If you do not own the latest designer clothes you're mocked for being and/or looking poor. K-pop is the only music played on the radio and the only music that the layman is exposed to. Quite sad indeed. Korea is so obsessed with beauty that they look down on everyone and everything. They're extremely shallow and vapid. If you don't wear the latest designer jacket you're also seen as just another peasant. They do everything to fit in, plastic surgery is extremely encouraged and often even bought as a graduation gift by parents. If you are not attractive enough (spend enough money on newest brand clothes and the slickest haircut) you are an outcast and will never be accepted. Amongst the highest suicide rates in the world, High pressure environments, no fun allowed, students study 16 hours every day. Korean culture is so vapid, shallow and conceited that it's sad. Conform, conform, conform. Image is everything in Korea. If you look different, think different or listen to different music you're shunned from society. Koreans are actually really superficial when it comes to shit like suits if you want to be successful in Korea just buy a nice suit and you don't have to do shit at work as long as you look professional they'll think you're getting shit done, gooks are retarded.

Extreme pride. People won't move out of your way on the sidewalk or hold a door open for you, or show minor gestures of friendliness.

The vast majority of the people are stressed out and it shows.

There are a few good things about it too. Yes it has low crime. Job opportunities are good. Economy is good. But the bad outweighs the good by far.

I hope Korean people will someday take a look at themselves in the mirror and realize how they look to an outsider's perspective.

Of course Koreans who are well traveled or born in other countries don't act this way. I'm not being racist here, it's not about race. It's about the culture in South Korea. Take a Korean person out of South Korea and they usually loosen up a lot.

I lived there for 3 years.

The first year when I encountered annoyances, I said "Oh that's just their culture. I'll try to accept it and I won't judge it. There's bad and good things in every country." I had the typical, western politically correct view towards it.

The second year, the problems there started to bug me more. I still just let it slide though and didn't let it bother me too much. I still enjoyed myself, but I found myself withdrawing from Korean culture more and more.

It's the logical conclusion to western consumerism. Every developed nation suffers from these problems to an extent, but I think it's due to Korea's rush to become globally relevant that they've lost any semblance of substance or originality.

What's funny is seeing Korean people struggling with the cognitive dissonance of understanding the banality of Korean culture, but still trying to embrace it because it's theirs. My sister's friends, many of whom are Korean, are very ambivalent to K-pop and K-dramas. Japan has a thriving independent music scene. Pop groups in the past created a unique sound and some like YMO (and all solo groups to follow) helped pioneer electro/experimental electronic music.

The third year, I started to hate the place. I picked up a lot of the language and I could overhear people making rude and racist comments towards me every day. I could understand conversations and I realized just how rude and shallow most people act.

Yes, if you are a foreigner and you walk down the street in Korea, Korean people will say insulting and racist things about you very, very often. Most foreigners can't understand Korean well enough to pick up on it though.

Anyway, I tried my hardest to like the place and have a positive time there. I did meet some great Korean people. But I think 95% of them are very closed-minded and selfish. 95% of them get sucked into the awful groupthinking mentality that is infamously unsavory and ridiculous. I lived there long enough to really understand it deeply.

After Korea I spent time in Southeast Asia and it was like breaking out of prison and going into paradise. In the USA they lump all Asians together as one people but they are very, very different.

I really hate Korea. It is the most superficial, mindless country on the planet. Most of them have a huge inferiority complex and would sell their soul(if they had one) to bring any glory to Korea. Racist? Yes, more so than any other newly industrialized or industrialized nation. When Koreans move to another country such as Canada or America, they often hold on to their stinging hatred of all things non-korean. Learn their language, study the culture and you'll find all their dirty secrets come to light. You like to beat your wife? Or drink yourself into a coma daily at your local whorehouse? Don't worry it's commonplace here. Are you willing to cheat or lie to save some face? Good, you'll fit right in. A Korean family is a business. Make us look good for the community kiddies, the parents shout. Education? It's a joke in Korea.

Korea is a weird ass country. Fiercely nationalist but really they have nothing to be proud of historically, I mean what, the mongols forces you to sail them to japan for some failed invasions, turtle boats, that's about it.
Their current culture is basically entirely rooted in a mixture of adopted Japanese Nationalism and Chinese Confucianism mixed with western culture. Even the "traditional" clothing they wear is basically completely inaccurate, and their traditional foods like kimchi are recent additions and created from European trade goods (red chili pepper).
It's kind of ironic with all their national pride, almost everything that is "Korean" to them is foreign orginated, they even add pretend "Korean" to all the foods like it's something they invented.

Korean language sounds really ugly. It's just mumbling, like someone making incoherent breathy sounds, moans and grunts. There's also a lot of random throat noises. Like they are about to spit or something. And when I'm watching k-dramas most of their conversations sound to me like "uhh uhh nay uhh hhuh somethin something", like all of those sounds are short and similar, I can't really believe they can say something meaningful or complex like that, but subtitles are telling me I'm wrong. It's not because it's an Asian language, Japanese for example is the complete opposite of this and there's so many different sounds there.

It's funny how Japanese language can be one of the foulest uses of the human voice if it's a guy speaking, but it's also the cutest language in the world if it's a girl. Amazing.
