Makes me wonder why they don't just reassign some I/O scripts to the other translator, but eh, how they decide to translate isn't really my business.

Nowadays I browse /jp/ from times to times, just to see how it goes. And actually, as I'm only reading VNs during holidays, I feel like there are way too many things to read.
The sad thing is that Muramasa, Baldr Sky etc are still not out.
Whereas Baldr Sky can be read, slowly, in Japanese (but not enough time to enjoy it). I wouldn't even bother with Muramasa and the like. Way too hard.

Well, as one of the hackers for Amagami, a PSP and PS2 game, let me give you and some others an on insight on what I think. Sorry if it seems like blogpost but might as well put some insightful stuff in this thread instead of the usual shitposting here.

Console game hackers are far and few in comparison to PC game hackers. But even then, there are reasons why it won't be done for a while.
Each of the reasons listed will be in the order of biggest barrier of translation to a game to least.

The biggest problem isn't ever really whether you can hack the game or not. For one, the biggest for console games is if whether you can play the hacked game once translated on its platform to see if it even merits hacking it at all. To my knowledge, you can now at this point for PS3 and 360 games.

For Amagami, the amount of testing we need to do each time to make sure stuff happened the way we wanted it to, like adjusting the text position because text doesn't fit, or changing the graphical interface requires immense retesting and trial and error to get right.Without an emulator, you can not save time on testing and it becomes a pain each time to test only a tiny change.

(cont.)

>> No.10876296

>>10876290

The last really "big" additional barrier to console games getting translations is the lack of debugging available in the respective game or being able to stop and change certain aspects of the game's running memory to know where to edit the game to translate it. I was able to overcome this somewhat due to the nature of my game, although there is one problem that can't be solved easily at the moment, but for most console games, this isn't easy and an emulator needs to have this kind of debugging built in. For the PS1 era, there is/was an emulator for the PS1 that could do that, which is why there are occasional PS1 games translated.

For the PS2, per say, PCSX2 had a debugger that was basic that almost did nothing, and they removed it shortly after implementing it in. This is why in comparison to the PS1, there have been only around 7 PS2 games to my knowledge that have received translations. It becomes immensely more difficult to try and figure out how the game works without a good debugger and most programmers don't have the time or skill to read through several megabytes of assembly to figure out what a game does.

If a hacker can overcome these basic 3 barriers, then it really becomes like any other game waiting to be translated on PC as on the console. Whether it can or can't be translated then depends on the hacker then.

Actually, to me it looks like those people don't really care much. It's the 'THEY'RE CUTTING OUT OVER HALF OF THIS NUKIGE, IT'D BE TERRIBLE IF THIS WERE A SUCCESS' people I'm talking about. The ones repeating bullshit hearsay that would be obvious from just looking up a tiny bit of information and/or just playing the demo. If they're expecting to release games with this poor of a translation and be successful, they're in for a rather rude awakening. I would rather not see that happen, so I tried to give them feedback, as did several others.

Censorship has always been the key line which the existing fan base refuses to support. While there certainty is a broader audience available for an all ages market (a combination of ignorance of the original source and the ability to advertise it far more broadly), thus far they haven't done much to try to take advantage of that, limiting themselves to the existing market. The existing fanbase though isn't suddenly going to support censorship though, and it would be foolish to believe that they would.

Honestly, TL quality doesn't seem to matter much for those who buy as long as it isn't first release Edelweiss quality. There are certainly some who will complain about the translation quality, but it seems most buyers in the West don't care as long at resembles English.

Yes. This is the kind of errors it has. No worse than this. There's a single additional comma in an otherwise completely fine line. It's perfectly readable. Similarly, at some other places, there is a mild grammar error or the line is a bit stilted. But it never goes beyond this. If this is really impossible to read for people, I question their literacy.

Aren't we in a thread for people who read VN translations (of which the official ones (and some fan translations) are often worse than this)? This level of translation is what we accept for other VNs; why is it suddenly a problem now?

As for the novel itself I agree their choice to remove the ero is quite dull, but a new translated title is better than nothing.
The quality is okay, but they do need an English editor at least.
That mistake is easily because of their language, since for them it's natural to have a comma in that line.

(The person speaking is the girl pointing at him, but that's besides the point.)

Yes, that's the entire point of the sentence, and that entire bit of plot. The protagonist's name, Minase Aoi, is often mistaken for a girl's name, and due to trickery on his mother's part, he was assigned as temporary 'dorm mother' of an all-girls dorm (the residents of which were of course expecting a female dorm mother). The screenshot features wheelchair girl objecting to the fact they're getting a male "dorm mother".

It still seems likely though that an 18+ DLC release will eventually come anyways, as the registry entry strongly hints at it. What else would you think a "sweet love patch" would mean if they are working on that. Although if they are planning that, they should announce it close to launch to avoid being beaten by the fan translation effort.

Paid DLC for 18+ content is probably the best approach a company could take, as they get the benefits of selling an all ages title, they open a secondary source of revenue for paid DLC, and they avoid being boycotted by the strongly anti-censorship crowd.

Curiously, Cross Channel was widely accepted until relatively recently, despite being a worse translation than this. Flyable Heart and Edelweiss are not even remotely comparable to this. AGM pretty obviously is a bunch of japanese speakers who hire freelance translators for all of their stuff. The translation of this game sucks dick, period.

I love the way even people defending it end up posting screens full of confusing lines with poor grammar that frequently take serious head-scratching to decipher. That sort of shit gets REALLY tiring and unpleasant over the course of a 50,000 line visual novel

So where exactly did I say anything which disagrees with that? Seems I have to explain it for the peasant.

If you don't understand there is part of CUSTOMER in contracting too who accepts the the job. When I say "their" I mean all the participants who have major role in the project, which includes the customer, the contractors and the sub-contractors etc.

If some participant hasn't done his job well, he'll get his feedback (by the words or offers will be ignored in the future or something else) which gives the participant a chance to improve his work in future.

I like to think the people posting those screenshots aren't very good at English themselves which is why they think it's not that bad.

This is neither their first project nor their first feedback. There is no reason to be lenient with them if they claim successes such as dear esther.

Which, to go alllll the way back to the top, is to say that the translation company has no excuse for putting out such a bad translation.

I'll reiterate the point which seems to have started all of this:
>I mean, why not just use straight machine translations? It's not like the English readers care about the text or anything, we're obviously fine mentally correcting the mistakes anyways.

Customer has freedom to accept the quality as they like. Then they will get their feedback from the top end customers (ones who buy the game) for accepting such quality. They can take it as feedback and check the quality more carefully next time.

If you really want to autism about THE FIRST, then let's change it one of the firsts and your autism nerves can rest. Usually reasons for such quality lies on lack of experience or/and resources, so I expect, at some level there is lack of experience or resources.

And to my original point; I am willing to give a chance and a support for the work which has more or less errors, if the content they are doing interests me, because it has chance to lead to more widespread phenomenon if projects like this, get supported. (and eventually the better quality)

Wrong thread and more or less wrong board (I don't think there's any better board for it, but /jp/ hardly posts about LNs other than some anime shitposters). This thread is about visual novels, which is an entirely different thing.

I don't know how common light novel translators are (probably more common than VN translators), but except for some scanlators, translators generally don't just translate something on a whim because someone requested it. The odds of someone translating what you want translated decreases as there are less translators in the scene.

Konosora has been confirmed to have sex jokes removed, kissing scenes altered (but not removed), and that it's not on Steam. See the Konosora thread for details.

>> No.10893907

>>10893890
It has also been confirmed to be a complete and total flop sales wise.

Look (vndb.org/t4084) the reply from MoeNovel to VDZ questions, lol:

>The kissing scenes will be altered so that it will not show any tongues or lips touching, but will show the back or side view of a couple kissing
>No, there are no plans to re-add sexual content. (DRM)
>No, we do not have plans to sell the game on Steam.
>The wording has been changed so that there are no sexual jokes.
>There are no plans to revise the translation for the full game at the moment.

So long for editing Grisaia?

Is anybody going to translate Taimanin Asagi 3?

>> No.10894244

>>10881424
Sweet Pool is 100% translated and having the early scripts checked before editing begins.

Lamento is proceeding along slowly (2/3 routes translated)

Omerta has a text translation in progress since no one has been able to hack the engine.

Lucky Dog 01 text translation is in progress, 1/4 routes done with the 2nd route over 90% completed. This also got the blessing of the Japanese company.

Sukisho was apparently chosen because it has an anime. They're planning on doing all 5 titles since the anime barely covered the 1st. The 1st game is apparently 15% completed.

I wonder if these are worth wanting a hack and a translation for.
Anyone here familiar enough with them to comment?

What happened anyway?

All I rember is that TLwiki guys translated it and it was almost done, and then Jast bought the license and tlwiki wanted to work together with Jast, so both sides got a bit of profit out of it. What went wrong?

>> No.10894530

>>10894398
JAST is retarded and never bothered to actually check the guy's translation until like 2 years later, where it turned out he wasn't actually that close to being done and his work was bad.

I don't know if they were paying him or not, but they were, that's even stupider of them

>> No.10894707

>>10894530

No one gets paid until the game is released, so needless to say he will not be getting any money.

What's even the point, then?

This is it, they completely deserve to flop. I hope even the parent company goes bankrupt for this shit. Fuck those faggots.

Probably will be getting some announcements from MG tomorrow (though likely just stuff we already know from the year end hint)

From MangaGamer's twitter account
>Also we have a panel at 8 PM tomorrow in the DaVinci room, A and B!

If they have any big announcements, it's unlikely they would come before AX.

Have they even made a genuine effort to hack it? Last thing I saw was that they wanted to try doing it through Visual Novel Reader.

Surely they could go on irc and ask for some help with it.
