I now understand how most of the money that is made from anime comes from figurines. Let's assume the materials cost around 10 USD, and the painting is 10 USD more. That'd still be anywhere from 30 to 70 USD profit for each one.

I don't think so. Anime BD can run 100+ USD per volume. With multiple volumes per series and plenty of people willing to buy them, the industry sustains itself on the dedicated otaku fanbase consuming these shows.

Figure sales certainly help, but there's a lot of work that goes into making them. I don't know if it's THAT profitable.

Materials and paint aren't the only things needed. There's a lot of work that goes into it and they're all sculpted by modelers originally, so you have to pay for their work before you start production. You're looking at more of $20-40 profit each for things like 1/7th scale, which is about half of the cost.

For clarification, the Alice I posted was a special, limited edition sold only at the small event she initially became available. The only difference with the regular model is that this one has black stockings instead of bare legs, as evidenced by the sticker on the box, and they all came with the extra doll set.

I mostly imports games. Bought ToHeart2 DX and they hit me with £28 tax when the game cost £65 with shipping. But then I got Idolmaster 2 (the limited edition one) like £90 and they didn't tax me at all. Now I'm scared of importing anything at all.

Parcel force aren't the ones who charge you, that's just customs. You just got lucky with iM@S 2 not getting charged, it's 20% of the item's value (Marked on the customs form by the seller)+Handling fee. Anything shipped from without the EU can be charged unless it's sent marked as a gift, I think gifts have a limit of £130 or so until they can be charged. Places like Mandarake and that will mark items as gifts if you ask and are also willing to undervalue so you don't get charged.

Best way to budget is just to take into account you could get hit by customs on everything you buy. If you want to order figures from within the UK, I've heard of these two places:
