A dead project and a lot of buttmad dramawhores is what you'll get if you try to create a "Western version" of something Japanese. When will people fucking understand that the differences in culture and work ethic make any Western attempt at creating, expanding on, modifying or imitating Japanese or Japanese-style pop culture a doomed attempt? While the Japanese place a lot of value in hard work, humility and actually having a good, solid product that they can deliver in time, for Westerners it's all about aknowledgement. The overwhelming majority of Western artists only want to be praised for being fantastic artists and brilliant creators, and because of that, practically all Western fan content or independent art is absolute garbage. Take your average piece of art on Pixiv as a test: maybe a bit rough and unpolished, but still something the artist has spent time and effort on, putting it out with no watermarks or copyright claims. Just art for the sake of creating and giving others enjoyment from it.
Now look at your average Deviantart "picture". A half-finished, smudged, mostly traced hack job plastered with watermarks, signatures and copyright claims ("because someone might steal it"), tagged WIP and never finished, the comments section swamped with "don't bash me for being individual", clumsy attempts at raking in commisions from pubertary hangers-on... the list continues. This also applies in full to light novels.
Partaking of Japanese culture is a privilege, not a right. Stand back and enjoy the show, but no touching. Don't get your filthy fingerprints all over the exhibition - you got it for free after all. It's like sneaking into an art gallery without paying the entrance fee to see the paintings, then running in, hanging up your own shoddy ripoffs, demanding twice the cover fee and videotaping everything to make sure no one steals your "art" or sees it for free.
inb4 "buttmad weeaboo" or "buttmad netouyo".
