Welcome to what people who like electronic music have been saying for years.

Too much copying and not enough innovation. People think innovation = smashing two gimmicks from two subgenres together to make a new one.

And of course now that it's cool to like electronic music people are getting paid more to do less.

If a genre is built on gimmicks and cookie cutter structures it will inevitably get very boring very quickly.

>> No.10826995

>>10826931
I don't know anything about music, but doesn't this basically mean that classical music written hundreds of years ago is some of the most "complex" music?

Normally when technology comes along, people discover they can do new things, and build on top of things. There are more electronic arrangements of classical music than I can count, but it seems one person playing a piano solo or writing for an orchestra 300 years ago is more involved than some of the best electronic music, even though we have all this software and technology to help us.

I guess people are still writing music traditionally and I'm also guessing there are people who make complicated electronic music (either for the sake of being complicated, or with the same thought behind it as a classical composer), but from my everyman point of view it feels like we're missing some sort of middle ground. It might be out there, but I haven't heard of it.

>> No.10827075

>>10826995

It entirely depends on the execution. It's not logic that applies everywhere.

Electronic music has evolved like this:

>I'll take the offbeat bass used in <subgenre>
>And use the supersaws from <other subgenre>
>And make a whole great new genre!!

It's technicality vs creativity. If your creativity is dependant on what technical aspects of music you can glue together, you will only sound derivative.

You could actually make good music by colliding two genres together, but it'll take more than just that - you need a good dose of creativity and musical fluency too.

Music technology used by electronic musicians evolves faster than the skill of electronic musicians, so producers are constantly in a state of 'woah, listen to this sound I can make'. Which while is fun and sometimes 'experimental' does not really make good music.

There's a load more problems, I can't even be bothered to go into them all. Electronic music needs a rehaul in its philosophy right from the ground up.

Glitch, trancecore, ambient techno, electro, big beat, industrial, trip-hop, breakbeat, ACTUAL dubstep (roots of the genre actually resembles something along the lines of dub + garage/2-step)

Wubstep has very little to do with actual dubstep. The dub reggae influence is nonexistent and it resembles electro way more than garage. Hell, the person who made first notable use of WUBWUBWUB hates it now because something he did to spice things up has become a staple and ran into the ground.

IDM is just for gearheads who decide to make musical collages from the sounds they discover on a synthesizer. It appeals to fans of the abstract because they believe that abstract = mysterious = obscure = good.

I hate to use the word 'hipster' normally but I'd say it's very much a hipster thing. Not everyone was that impressed when Aphex Twin first started making music.

The thing is with derivative music is that it gets worse the more it derives.

Sure you can argue that technically everything derives from classical or even bongo drums in africa or some shit, but the reality is that classical sounds vastly different from say, rock or blues.

Liquid Drum n Bass does not sound vastly different from Drum n Bass or even Breakbeat Hardcore if you want to nitpick. The structures are almost identical.

>>10827260

Come on, even people who love psytrance are bored to fucking death with it, same with most genres out there. Everyone in the psy community seems to agree that it's getting really ridiculous. Even the psy splinter genres are stupid. 'Psychill' AKA Ambient with a few stereo 'psychedelic' effects. 'Prog Psy' AKA Post-2000 israeli psytrance played at 130bpm. 'Psy breaks' AKA Drum n Bass with a few 'woosh' effects, 'Psy Dub' AKA Dub with 'psychedelic' effects (Dub already had these).

And so on and so forth.

Most Psytrance producers just make music in a different genre, add some 'psychedelic' effects (That aren't really that psychedelic anyway) and then package it as 'Psy-<genre>' because the album art has a glowing buddha on it or a space vista image with fractals on it.

It's homogenized to buggery. Even Neo-goa is nothing like old goa, it's just entirely based on sampling the same leads Astral Projection used in 1997 and compressing the balls off them. Add a modern Psytrance laser kick and woohoo, we have 'Neo-goa', it's dumb.

>>10827086
I get what you're saying. Honestly, I like these doujin dubstep/electro groups *because* most of them do more interesting songs than the average dubstep producer, but even I'm getting tired of cookie-cutter brostep and have been trying to get into more traditional dubstep.

As a fan of both genres, I don't really get people trying to claim that breakcore is more sophisticated or pleasant to listen to than dubstep, though. It's so fucking ironic when someone complains about how horrible dubstep is ("Is this even music? How can you enjoy this?") then proceeds to put on a generic breakcore beat with 3-4 weeaboo songs stitched together and a few HILARIOUS anime soundclips thrown on top. You are right, but this is really not a good thing.

I would never say to someone, "Wow, I really like Liquid Drum n Bass, please recommend me some more!".

People who are new to it treat electronic music like it's a commodity - a sonic background of sorts. They don't care about whether it's well written they just wanna hear the 'sick bass' or whichever musical gimmick that genre provides.

And really, electronic music only has itself to blame. The more you pigeonhole yourself, the more you stifle your own creativity. Try to make a trance track at 132 bpm without someone calling it 'progressive'. Try to make a dubstep track with an ambient feeling to it and watch someone call it 'Dubchill'. Try making a darker sounding drum n bass track and watch someone call it 'glitchstep' or 'darkstep' or something.

Listen to 808 State - Pacific State, it was a house track with an ambient vibe to it. That's all people thought of it.

But now, if someone was to make that track it would be Progressive ambient chillhouse jazzfunk. So essentially, what you're doing is you're not allowing the genre of house to experiment, because the moment it does - it stops being house.

And thus the standards are set. Creativity now equates to subgenres being merged - and with that they don't become creative deviations from the norm, just atypical examples of the new sub-sub-sub-subgenre they have created just by existing.

The way to fix it? Stop. Copying. Stop pigeonholing music.

It's not effecting you though, more choice is good for those who want to dig deeper into it for what they'll really like in it. We really do want it. Now you're just coming off as someone who's crying because it's too complex for you to understand when you're not heavily into music at all.

No there isn't, at least not in the sub-subgenres of electronic music.

Most of it is essentially key variables randomized and sounds changed slightly.

Look at Trance currently, there's absolutely no variation in that at all. Same supersaw leads everywhere - the ones we've seen for over 10 years. Same offbeat sidechained basslin. Same generic female vocals with meaningless lyrics. It's absolutely awful.

>>10828091

Psychill is nonsense. If you were to make Psychill in the 90s it would have just been 'Ambient with a slightly psychedelic flavor' (If that). It wasn't a genre, it was just seen as having your own unique style or a track having it's own unique sound.

Even people who are into psytrance aren't impressed. A lot of these 'new genres' aren't new at all, they're just labels for previous creative endeavors but because nobody can make anything original they want to package it as a genre to make it sound more important than it is.

>>10828110
>No there isn't, at least not in the sub-subgenres of electronic music.
I'm saying most sub-subgenres aren't necessary. I agree with what you say about trance, but not all genres are that way. Just look at hip-hop. There are tons of different styles and sounds even if they follow the same basic conventions. And besides, if someone wants to listen to trance, let them listen to trance--if that's what they want then the label has helped them.

>> No.10828160

Trance has become homogenized as a result of too much labelling though.

That's why labels are a bad thing.

Want to make 132bpm trance? Too bad, you can't - it's progressive now. Want to make trance with a vocal? That's vocal trance. How about trance WITHOUT supersaws? That's not even Trance! Big breakdown? You're making Epic Trance.

Trance is trance, just like house is house. There are shit tons of subgenres, sure, but you don't have to use them. If anything, the existence of subgenres implies variation because they seek to make more accurate categorizations.

I think trance sounds horribly homogenous, but I don't think subgenres are responsible. The problem is ease of production. The problems you see in trance you will see in almost all EDM. Truth is, most people are creatively bankrupt. The internet makes this more apparent than ever.

there is no such thing as a touhou dubstep album; not from circles that release at comiket, anyway.

c83 東方albums with three dubstep tracks: 2
c83 東方albums with two dubstep tracks: 1
c83 東方albums with one dubstep track: 5
c83 東方albums with ~30 seconds of dubstep: 3
c83 東方 shitty metal albums: over a bajillion

that's with a very broad definition of dubstep. i think the only one that hasn't been uploaded is Progressive Starbow 2.

C83 2hu albums with dubstep* featuring somewhere in at least one song: 100%

*Dubstep meaning any music that sounds like some shitty Skrillex song. No distinction is made between "brostep", "dubstep" or any other variation as it all sounds the same and is all objectively shit.

Just because people breakdown dubstep into a million sub genres doesn't change the fact that it's still shit and it's still dubstep.

We've had this argument running throughout the thread and it doesn't change anything. People only give it a different name in a pathetic attempt to dodge criticism. Sorry guys, dubstep is objectively bad.

easy modo for a dubstep song
make shitty song with a slow and simple drum pattern on ableton or whatever you like
add shitty distorted bass and random loud sounds, the more "wubs" the better
yeah lets kill the melody who cares
start with a slow bpm then make it faster
add faggot lyrics or not, your choice
