And stuff about her character being comforting to the average nip at the time. Then there is that interview where he said "strong women" like Asuka and Misato aren't as popular as Rei in Japan. Nothing about him designing her for that purpose. He only "thinks" and "supposes" why she's so well received. Rei simply struck a chord with many a viewer.

And again, he seems more upset about (unintentionally) exacerbating the "problem". He'd have no right to get mad if he created Rei to be loved by such people.
