God damn it, why does Touhou Project make me feel things like this? Happiness, epicness, excitement, sadness, all that. The games don't have a whole lot of explicit depth. Yet when I listen to the music, I feel those emotions. Same for stories and pictures and whatnot. Makes me love Touhou.

I really don't get these in Touhou. It's a setting where immortality and long lives are easy as fuck to get your hands on if you really want to and have very few canonical downsides, yet nine out of ten doujins will have them going "waaaah my humanity ;_;" and refusing, as if they were making some deep philosophical point about the human condition. What the fuck does that even mean? The various youkai and magicians and hourai-elixer-drinkers clearly aren't all that inhuman or you wouldn't want to be friends and/or lovers with them in the first place. What the fuck, in concrete terms, are you losing here? Japan just has a boner for these bittersweet mayfly endings, logic be damned. If you're all about humanity, you shouldn't just be accepting that, you should be striving to change it at any cost.

I liked that Meisaku doujin where Sakuya just says "you know what, fuck it, 'I'll lose my humanity' is a stupid, meaningless argument, let's go ask Patchy how to become a youkai tomorrow".

People like writing stories about the human condition. It allows them to imagine that things are deep and meaningful.

The human condition is a coincidence, and people hold the wrong things about it sacred. It's not the mortality, or the morality, or the vitality of us that matters: those are only symbols we use to see parts of us. They have emotional quality because they are what we are going to see when we interpret the world. That symbolic interpretation, the judgment, that's what's special. It's really the only thing.

Goddamn Sakuya dying of old age is a played-out bit. Even though its heavily implied she's lived much much longer than she appears to have, giving the idea that we have no idea how long she might live.

>>10810219

...Certainly I can't be the only one that thought that was just kinda, I dunno, stupid?

Like almost everything about it?

Too many artists forget that Youkai are pretty fucking different from humans in a lot of ways, not just physically and mentally but their point of view on things as well. Death doesn't have the same impact to them as it would to humans.
