/jp/ is one of the only boards where you can still type in unicode, ascii, and other irregular text formats for things such as typing in Japanese, using Japanese emoticons, or SJIS art. Believe it or not, these are indeed parts of otaku culture.

Most of the other boards filter out ascii and irregular text or won't allow it to be posted.
/jp/ is one of the only boards where you can still ｔｙｐｅ　ｌｉｋｅ　ｔｈｉｓ while on other boards it gets converted to half-width automatically. I won't have you get rid of such things just to satisfy your text autism.
