I like toho games.

How can I resize the game in windowed mode? The resolution lines in vpatch.ini didn't seem to do anything. I'd like to stream but I can't handle 640x480 windowed.

Got it working. I had to set AskWindowMode = 0 for the window resize to work, otherwise it would only do fullscreen or 640x480.

Is it just me or are some of Yukari's spells easier than Ran's equivalent? I'm thinking specifically of Yuakri's Spiriting Away, because she seems to take longer between movements. Also, before I got the balls to get through Ran's first spellcard, I found Yukari's version of it easier because you could stream instead of just make nerve-wracking micrododges.

On a related note, I think Ran is an easier midboss than Chen, because her first spell card (Shikigami "Protection of Zenki and Goki") is easier to stream than Chen's (Oni Sign "Blue Oni Red Oni").

Though of course overall Extra is easier than Phantasm, especially the stage portions and the final few spell cards.

What's the etiquette on copying routes from replays when playing for score?

Has there ever been a case where two high-scorers follow the exact same route with only minute differences between them and their score?

I could see it happening and I guess it would be a point of contention like "I did it first, you just copied me!".
I don't know, I'm just curious. I reached a point in my game where I can either continue as I have, blind and piecing things together, or take "inspiration" from superplays and the like.

If you're going to be an assclown and tell me "it's not like you'll beat them so why not :V" (who am i quoting?) don't bother.

I wouldn't say that copying a route is frowned upon, But If anything you should study the route and implement your own strategies to get the 'minute' difference. There's going to be some obvious similarities between score routes (i.e. places to deathbomb in MoF) But there's the subtle differences in the routes and milking that make the difference between the higher score and the lower score.

I've never come across any arguments like that. People use certain supergrazes that some other player has implemented all of the time, but they hardly get sued for it. The method will be named after the player if it's very memorable. (for example, there is a method referred to as a HS-style PCB stage 4 opener) Players who come up with new methods are often respected by the scoring community.

Replays being completely the same probably will never happen, since most people have quirks of their own and routes of their own. Also, when improving a World Record, you must do at least something differently to gain a larger score.

When it comes to watching replays and copying methods, or asking for advice, you are free to do that. However it's still a good idea to build your own route and figure out why to do things in a certain way, not just how. At least I find it really fun.

UFO: a lot, both stage and boss
TD: Miko's first three nonspells. This is the worst offender for me because of how the background promptly changes into something more suitable during her spells, kind of like ZUN is actively shoving it in your face. Also it's insulting because Miko is so easy and it's almost impossible to die against her otherwise

Sounds like you're just not used to those spells. I have problems with miko's non spells when the bullets are on my yin yan orbs, but even then its not too troubling.

Similarly, I felt uncomfortable in td stage 4 and in stage 4 (chase part) where the background was fast moving. And then I got used to it to the point where I could ignore the background.

Are there specific points that you're having trouble with? Look at replays and run through those segments in Practice mode until you have it down. If you really can't do a particular part, don't be afraid to declare it an auto-bomb. I spent my entire senior year playing touhou for 45 minutes every single day during homeroom, as well as an hour or two when I got home.

I can't 1cc on normal, or even beat normal on a few games like SA, UFO, and I only beat remilia once.

How do I get good so I can play the extra stages? Not playing the extra stages really, really bothers me.

I get all of them on stages 1 and 2, and like 90% on stage 3. Then stage 4 I just struggle to survive most of the time, except in MOF and TD where stages 4 and 5 were cakewalks. I actually got all of sanae's shit, and then got ass blasted by kanako.

Are you really playing for score when your max hit combo is a measly little 300hit in 1-1? I mean, I'm trying my hardest to chain and grab the bees for a massive bonus, but it still doesn't feel like I'm playing for score. Or rather, that I'm not playing good enough to be able to play for score.

The way I see it, if you actively try to score, you are scoring. If you break your chain early on, then you aren't scoring very well. The fact that you try your best to keep it going means that you are playing for score, just not doing very well at it and that you'll need to practice it more if you want to score better.

A survival player doesn't give a crap about the chaining. It's just a number that goes up and drops seemingly randomly. That survival player's only focus is playing in the way that offers the least amount of risk while a score player takes certain risks with the aim to up his score.

They are not as exclusive of each other as you make them out to be. I try to score in the first 3 stages of DDP, but after that it is less about scoring and more about for survival for me.

That's definitely correct. If it's a game in which survival becomes difficult for the player but the early stages are easy, perhabs too easy to be enjoyable, then adding score play to those early stages can actually make the game more fun.

I know that if you get too close to the 1-2 boss in DDP after a certain phase, he shoots out a wave of bullets. It isn't touhou related, and my memory is really fuzzy because I haven't played in almost two years, but I remember dying to it on my first credit.

What is the best way to practice? I've been playing DOJBL(1-loop mode with saves because it has harder patterns than 2-loop mode right from the start.) and I'm kind of wondering if there is anything else I can do to practice my dodging skills and reaction time. Oh yeah, is 1-loop mode pretty much the same as White Label? Because I've played that years ago on my PS2, and the difficulty seems really similar.

If there's certain sections that are giving you trouble try watching some replays, seeing how other people do those sections should give you a better idea on how to handle them.
DOJBL 1-loop mode is still a bit easier than DOJ until you reach Hibachi, but clearing it including Hibachi is quite a bit harder than a DOJ 1-ALL

No, not in the slightest. I wasn't trying to impress anybody - one year to clear DOJBL is beyond terrible, but I'm still happy I was able to clear it. Even people starting from complete beginner level can clear it within a month or two of practice, but that's besides the point. Really, I just want people to know that they can improve at something, even if they are stuck with slowbrain or a lack of talent. My progress was extremely slow, and isn't really notable or anything, but it is improvement nonetheless.

I'm sorry if I can't get the point across. It's probably just the slowbrain syndrome coupled with my lower IQ making it tougher for me to word things.
