Why can't I naturally get rendaku down? Learning those on-readings from KD were nice but since those mnemonics stayed with me so strongly any words that have rendaku I keep getting wrong.

I just got this message "Congratulations! You have finished this deck for now." which is fine. But how can I keep reviewing the Kanji I just studied without adding new cards? Click on Custom Study when you're on that screen. Don't forget to unselect the "reschedule cards based on my answers" from the options if you want to keep your normal schedule

I don't even bother with whatever studying algorithms that Anki works off of. I just choose all the cards in a random order and go through them until I've got it memorized. Then again, I also make my own decks, so whatever works

Can't tell if you're kidding or not, but I'll bite. The whole point with having an algorithm schedule your cards like Anki does is to not have to review cards you know well all the time. I honestly don't think you should have that setting at anything less than at least 3 months, and even that might end up biting you in the ass within a year. Working with a maximum interval of well over a year is common practice. I assume you mean 結婚 (けっこん) if you're talking about marriage. You say "marrying", so I guess you have a decent idea of how -te + iru works, but instead of thinking about it English and adding "-ing" or something, think of it as making the verb a continuous or habitual action. So once Smith marries, he's continuously married (until she fucks him over), -te + iru would be used. In other words, he is married.

Reviews pile up, but it won't add new cards by itself unless you're given a new card and you answer it at least once, which will flag it as "learning" rather than just "new". Anyway, if you're expecting that you won't be able to do your reps daily over there, but occasionally get the time, you might be better off turning off new cards completely and just keep up with reviews as best as you can until you get back.

As for bringing Anki with you, on Windows it'll store the database and the program itself separately by default, so copy-pasting might not go smoothly, as it might store the database path in the registry and whatnot. You might want to test if it works first if you do it, at least. Syncing is by far the best option, though. If you don't have internet, you should probably use its export function and put the exported database on your external HD and import it on whatever computer you'll be using while you're gone. Then, before you leave, just export the updated one and import it when you get back.

You know, when you have a break that long, you simply give up trying to maintain any continuity. So I just took it easy, decided to not strain myself trying to remember everything, and just skimmed through all my cards for a few day, half an hour at a time, taking no more than a second or two to decide whether I remember it or not. A soft restart of a kind.

Then there was the matter of relearning, but it turned out to be really easy. I already knew most of it, and I already gave up on all expectations, so I never hesitated to fail cards immediately, and reps started being fun again. I guess the problem I used to have before was clinging to the things I've "learned", stressing myself too much over forgetting things, and getting lost in the routine instead of trying to look at the bigger picture.

As for kanji, the idea behind that lazy thing there doesn't seem to bad, but honestly I don't feel like learning a reading or two along with each kanji card is too much trouble. This is more of an issue you have to find what you prefer yourself, though. Some like RTK, some like KD, some completely skip individual kanji, and so on.

I eventually came to a cave past the forest and even with the medallion that the old man gives you to protect you from slime magic, I still was unable to damage them and they mercilessly kicked my ass. Maybe I'm playing it wrong, but I didn't enjoy it.

And I had no problem reaching the end of the cave, so you might have indeed been doing something wrong there.

I did that for awhile and it did help e read eroge faster with better comprehension. I went through the core 2000 afterwards though just to round out my vocabulary, I like learning new words now even if I never use them. The core decks have more words that you would use as a functioning member of society or something to read a newspaper with.

>as a general rule if you can’t answer within about 10 seconds, it’s better to give up and show the answer than keep struggling to remember.

Can someone explain why? I always thought that as long as you answer it it doesn't really matter but then I can't find any studies that proves this and maybe just failing it after 10 seconds would just be better.

It's just common sense. For starters, if you keep your card review times in check, you can make more of them. Instead of trying to remember a card for 20 seconds, it's better to fail it and make five 4-second reviews of it in the following days.

the point of the cards is to figure out the answer almost instantly.

if it takes more than a second, it still needs to be drilled.

From that, 10+ seconds where you stare at it and try to recall --that's when you hit the answer button, grab a pen and paper, and write out the thing, the reading, AND the translation 20 times because you are failing hard at the memorization part and need a strong refresher that will make that card stick in your mind so that you will actually know what it means by the time it shows up again in a few days.

Some people learn kanji separate of vocab (words made with kanji/s) so they get familiar with them. Personally I believe in just going straight to vocab and picking them up that way.
