Got my CS degree in Canada while learning Japanese on the side. I wanted to immediately go to Japan and work as a programmer there but it seemed impossible. All the jobs asked you to speak native-level Japanese and 80% asked you to already be in Japan (they sponsored your visa, though), so I decided to teach English first to improve my Japanese significantly and then I moved to a software development job at the end of my contract.

The only point is being able to go to the Taito HEY arcade until 1AM (or should I say 25:00), without worrying about missing the last train to go home.

I lived right down Akiba for about 6 months, and that was the best part. Around 23:30~24:00 you see everyone rushing to the station to get back home, while you can enjoy playing until closure of most arcades at 25:00.

Akiba is pretty nice. If given the choice to live there, and not live there (all costs equal), I would definitely choose to live there.

Every time I visit Tokyo, it is on my go to list.

Realistically, everything in akiba is fairly expensive, and the maid cafes while entertaining, tend to be quite the money sink if you frequent them.

This may come as a surprise to some, but you will find in maid cafes, a decent portion of the girls have no otaku interests at all, and do it for the money. This was an interesting discovery that I made while visiting a few with my Japanese friend.

But, having actually been acquainted with real otaku, they are just like anyone else you would meet, (if you thought otherwise). One person I talked to would ramble on and on about anime, characters, latest fads, etc, and I could not keep up. He was a really good test to Japanese listening proficiency though, because he talked blazingly fast.

Another guy I spoke to has a 'salary' position, and just loves the older anime. He talks about how the newer anime has no substance, and its all about the 'moe'.

And one older striving artist dude I talked to was pretty cool. He told me that he really doesn't appreciate the 'low quality' of the anime style in artwork these days, and how he is trying to go 'against the grain' in the respect of having detailed Japanese style artwork (a la Berserk/Vagabond).
