Zun's going for some kind of meta-narrative here and he's going to be adding a Jesuit Touhou to the mix. She's going to be a nun based on Francis Xavier.

> At the back of the shrine "Suwa-Taisha," there is a mountain called Mt. Moriya ("Moriya-san" in Japanese). The people from the Suwa area call the god of Mt. Moriya "Moriya no kami," which means, the "god of Moriya." This shrine is built to worship the "god of Moriya."
> At the festival, a boy is tied up by a rope to a wooden pillar, and placed on a bamboo carpet. A Shinto priest comes to him preparing a knife, and he cuts a part of the top of the wooden pillar, but then a messenger (another priest) comes there, and the boy is released. This is reminiscent of the Biblical story in which Isaac was released after an angel came to Abraham.

I'm thinking about becoming a Catholic. I find the theology to be rich and thought-provoking and I love the reverence it still has for Christian symbolism. I've grown tired of childish Protestantism and its glib casualness and insecurity with its own beliefs.

Wish me luck, /jp/!

Historically wasn't Shinto so enmeshed with Buddhism that, for the Japanese, they were basically the same religion? Like Buddhism and Hinduism in some of the Northern bits of India.

In that case, I don't have to choose between Reimu and Byakuren.

>> No.10645001

Buddhism went full retard with various people trying to use it to push their morality on everyone else (see: karma), so there's no way I'd want that.

Taoism, I dunno about, but it looks like a "take it easy" philosophy, so I'm good with that. The aim of immortality is nice too.

Shinto is alright. It doesn't really have many drawbacks as far as I can tell, but then again, it's loosely defined. The whole "gods" system makes for some good benefits too, as long as you don't piss them off.

I guess I'd probably go with Taoism though.

Still, in terms of factions, Byakuren is probably my favourite. I mean, she doesn't really follow Buddhism that closely anyway. Sticking to some precepts isn't enough to make her boring.

So are you aiming towards Roman Catholicism or Orthodox Catholicism?

Let me explain the difference!

And that is, there is no difference really aside from the Papacy. Roman Catholics are Catholics with a Pope, Orthodox Catholics are Catholics without one. They stick to their Patriarchs instead.

Also, all Orthodox Catholics are Eastern but not all Eastern Catholics are Orthodox. See Catholicism is divided into nine rites, the Roman Catholics follow the Roman (or Latin) rite and the Eastern Catholics follow the other eight. And some of those Eastern Catholics, like the Maronites, are actually in full communion with the Roman Catholic Church, they just keep their own rite because rites don't really matter I guess.

Those that aren't in full communion with the Roman Catholic Church are the Orthodox Catholics.

Interesting huh? And again the differences between Roman and Orthodox Catholics has very little to do with dogma or doctrine as opposed to 600 years of hard feelings for the 4th crusade and whatnot.

Most likely Roman Catholicism. Being of Italian heritage it seems culturally more palatable to me. I don't know much about Orthodoxy but I would like to understand more about it. All that Byzantium history seems alien and intimidating but I'd like to at least know more about it.

I'm not sure how I feel about adjusting to the hierarchy of Roman Catholicism but I've learned to love ritual and to understand the beauty of all of its meaning and allegories thanks to a bit of my own experience and from the helpful experiences of others.

The Lakota are sort of monotheistic, by the way.

Technically they have their animistic pantheon but they also believe in a supreme, all encompassing creator entity, Wakan Tanka, the Great Spirit, though some scholars insist that "Great Mystery" is a better translation.

So they're sort of like the monotheistic Hindus.

Isn't that great /jp/? Religious studies is my favorite part of Otaku Culture!

>> No.10645046

...You guys are kidding about Christianity, right?

That religion makes me scared. The original texts don't even seem to mention a "devil" at all, or anything like that, and yet the people claim that anything they don't like is "Satanic." Can't practice magic, can't worship gods, can't do anything or you're somehow devoted to the "devil."

Actually Satan never really appears in the Hebrew Bible. He's all over the place in the New Testament.

In the Hebrew Bible, the devil only shows up three times, all of which are postexilic, and he's not necessarily a bad guy either. When he shows up in Job it's understood that he is a member of the Celestial court whose purpose is to test humanity.

And it's important to note that, with the Genesis account of creation, the snake is not originally associated with the devil.

I actually know a fair bit about Voudou. I'll tell you this though, it's an incredibly divisive and factional belief system. There's hardcore black voudou practitioners that say because it's a west African tradition it should only be practiced by blacks. There's Santeros that are incredibly strict and say you have to go through them for everything. And then there's sporadic cults spread around the world that center on some local charismatic figure.

Know this: voudou is simply an African folk religion. It's been synthesized with Christianity to some degree, but at its core it is just black polytheism that relies on contradictory divination readings and luck. You have to be willing to drink chicken or goat blood on a regular basis and have at least $30 on you at all times.

Well they're both polytheistic. Though there are monotheistic Hindus and non-theistic Hindus.

The non-theistic Hindus treat the gods and spirits as archetypes and whatnot rather than real entities.

I think lots of neo-pagans are actually the same way.
