I was directed over here (I wasn't sure if there was just one doll thread) so I will re-ask.

So I am thinking about trying my hand at making some BJD's. A few questions for the doll folks out there:

- Do you have a preferred scale? If so, why?
- Is there something specific that makes a design a "must have" for you or do you get whatever strikes your fancy?

Thanks!

I prefer 1/3 scale, because it's the easiest to find clothing and other accessories for.

If you're going to make your own doll, it should be whatever you want it to be. Dolls themselves are incredibly customizable, so you can really do whatever you want!

Don't be afraid to venture outside with your dolls to take pictures in parks or near fountains. I love taking pics in gardens!

Most people just glance at you taking pics and move along. Some people will come up to you and be interested in your model. Most people though, will just ignore the guy taking pics. So don't worry about taking your girls outside to do a photoshoot. You won't learn what poses/angles you like unless you get out there and try.

Thanks a lot, i really appreciate.

A quick not (not really); i probably picked the most ungrateful clay i could get: Near 7% of shrinkage, stick like hell, as solid as a piece of chalk once dry. I still managed to get something, this is encouraging.
I have to leave that doll as it is and consider switching material for the next one. I'll probably go with Linen Clay, should have used that from the start.

Since i found out that i had access to a pottery oven, i may even try to get a ceramics/porcelain doll, I wish myself luck with that...

You can imagine my horror when my package arrived from yahoo!japan - it was supposed to be a DD2 body, a DDH-04 and a spare 01 that I'd have gotten rid of, but turned out to be the body and TWO DDH-01s, agh :D

Oakley glasses are a high caliber American product that commenced as BMX bike handles in the late 70's to mid 80's, before Oakley made their initial pair or glasses. And then they exploded. And with their grand demand came the swell of phony Oakley sunglasses showering the open sunglasses market, attempting to fulfill the requirements of the public and capitalizing on the popularity of the Oakley sunglasses trademark. So knowing that there is an ocean of imitation eyeglasses out there, how can you tell the genuine from the phony?

Sorry if I'm being a bother but where can I get a doll like this? A doll with a similar face and body and such.

Don't mince words.

Just tell him to give you the doll, or information as to where you could purchase the exact same one.

I want her too.

I asked long ago and was told the heads were the volks DD heads. If that's the case then they're probably custom faces.

I wanted them too.

It is a Mini Dollfie Dream, with custom face-up. The mouth on the doll head was smoothed with sandpaper, and a mouth was just painted on. It's not difficult to do, if you wanna do your own face-up.

The body is just a MDD base body, you can order one from Volks' USA site. You can scour Yahoo Japan for custom DD heads, or just buy a blank head and have the face-up commissioned (Dollfiedreams.com and Den of Angels are both good forums for finding an artist).

There are lots of cute MDDs so maybe you'll fall for one of the standard models.

It's considered insulting to copy or replicate an original doll. Because people work very hard to build up a character, look, etc, of their own that is original and unique. It is a lot more work than just copying.

But it's a DD01 head modded on a MDD body. Custom head, so.

I saw your picture and cant help to fall in love there.

Lurked around and noticed that head is from SQ Lab. Their website looks slightly dodgy and they did not reply my inquiry mail yet.

tl;dr i can your reviews on SQ Lab quality and service?

I've never bought from SQ Labs directly and I always found their website confusing as hell to navigate (and faulty at best with all those animations)

I would reccomend looking into a proxy service and ordering an SQ labs head from Yahoo!Japan.

If you're referring to this uniform there's a possibility the top has no clasps and the doll needs to be dressed by removing the arms.

I think the pictures from this site might be useful.

http://www.murasaki.me/2012/03/12/tartan-sailor-school-uniform/

You could also try contacting her for more details about how she makes her uniforms. She seems pretty nice so I'm willing to bed she would give you some tips or patterns or something.

That uniform zips out in the front. They were looking for sewing solutions to collared uniforms with no front closure like the one they posted in >>10705043

>>10708521
If you're making for DD, clasps and discreet closure aren't mandatory, they're just more convenient since not all dolls can be dressed by removal of head and limbs (SD & other resin varieties for example)

>> No.10708949

well was hoping for a extreme close up, nothing with zippers if possible i can do those just wondering how they do those on the back with the sailor flap intack. I'm making a sailor uniform that wouldn't look good with a front enclouser but the sailor flap doesn't seem seperated.

Hey /jp/, any recommendations on people that can do great face-ups? I'm planning out a custom DD project (first time dollfie buyer, azones only so far) and although I can deal with the rest of it I'd rather get someone experienced in the art to do the face.

dollfiedreams forum seems to have a section for it, but all the commissions are closed..

I heard they were pretty elitist towards anime styled dolls? Besides, they require an invitation code on registration and I do not know anyone ;~;

>> No.10710327

>>10710248
I don't know about the elitism but it wouldn't surprise me. The categories are strictly organized by doll size and type and the site is moderated heavily. Dollfie Dreams lives in one ongoing thread. I would invite anyone I could but didn't spend enough time there to gather the minimum requirements to expand my presence.

If you don't know any members you can try emailing membership@denofangels.com and explain you don't know any members and you'd like to join.

Serious question.

Why do they all look retarded? Nice clothes and all but the faces are pretty stupid.

My mecha garage kits and figures at least LOOK like the mecha down to the smallest details. Even if it's an anime character her figure looks like they do in the show/videogame.

I've been to museums and wax sculptures are just a big doll but the face looks so scary real. Why aren't the body's right on 99% of dolls out there. Is the appeal some kind of artistic thing?

>> No.10715691

Dolls aren't meant to be scale models of people, not anymore than anime and manga are supposed to reflect real anatomy perfectly accurately.

Well done custom realistic heads are hard to find, it takes a good deal of skill to master all the steps to get one; Sketch, carving, face-up.
Generally monstrous head are the result of a lack of skills, or dubious tastes.
Furry are the worst of them all, i feel insulted any time i see one.

Interesting question, that's never come up before in that respect. The simple answer is, they're not intended to be scale representations, even if they're based on licensed characters. Instead, the character they're based on are used as a flexible foundation for their appearance or can be used to one of your own desire.

Some people will spend several hundred dollars on a doll and put her in a display case as-is, others will repaint her into another character completely and a huge bulk of the community will do everything else in between. If you visit any doll forum, out-of box dolls are met with brief applause on release (much in the way an out-of-box gundam is) but ongoing interest is driven by changing things up on a regular basis, even if they're minimal.
