If it really bothers you that much, whip your butter. The toast will be long cold before the clump of butter required to properly cover a piece of toast will be completely melted.

The only thing I use toast for anymore is making grilled cheese.

I keep my butter in room temperature.

Salted butter does not require refrigeration and should stay on the counter top.

I made a cheese toastie earlier. Me mum puts the bread in the fridge (wtf) and the cheese in the fridge, but they both melted just right in the grill. It was right nice and I think people should do the same for butter. Make butter sarnies because no poor sod has only one slice of toast, you have two or more.

I put the butter I'm going to use next to the toaster, so it melts a little bit and it spreads nicely. But when I must use cold butter, op's method works well, too.

I usually eat a bagel instead of a normal piece of toast, bagels are much tougher so I can spread cold butter on it without ruining it

I used to cut off a slab of butter, put it on the toast, then microwave it for 2 seconds.

I love bagels so much, I can eat them every day if they are made fresh. Around where I live there is this place called Brueggers Bagels and they make the best bagels I have ever eaten. The cinnamon sugar and cheese ones are my favorite. If I'm really lucky I get the softer, lighter colored ones and it's like heaven in my mouth. Don't get to get bagels much from there anymore.

I've recently started using coconut oil on my toast instead of butter. It's actually quite delicious and coconut oil is an extremely nutritious food. Apparently it also improves memory, so I look forward to staving off Alzheimer's
