I was a little disappointed when I first played MoF because it looked a little too showy, and some of the mechanics felt like he was making the game more accessible (that "Item border line!" thing set off warning bells).

I still really really hate the combined power/bomb system. I guess it's fun to collect things that matter more immediately than points or the game-specific gimmick pickups, but I just think it was a dumb move and I prefer the old way.

That said it was still a fun game (one of my favorites) and the later games are fun too. I just generally liked the earlier games more.
