Flaming and misogyny aside, at what point is something liberating and at what point is it objectifying?

Someone linked to a popular article a few days ago about how Starfire has become increasingly sexualized. The author seemed to be all for women having enjoyable sex whenever they want, but took fault with how Starfire has enjoyable sex whenever she wants.

If women "objectify" or sexualize themselves, is that fine? I could kind of understand that. Both sexes get what they want.

I think the objection is that Starfire's recent depiction and sexualization has little to nothing to do with that of real women. Those comics are drawn by men for men, and are essentially adolescent whackoff fantasy. There seems to be a preponderance of clueless male creators in comics these days; I think that's where the objection comes from.

I actually prefer the older comic book styles, when the shading was flatter and they all used the same font. I think it was probably because of printing limitations or something.

Some new comics try different styles, but all they really do is go from "slightly gritty" to "very gritty".

Still beats monochromatic Jap comics.

I suppose. Call me ignorant, but isn't that what positive female role models usually are?

I've seen feminists look at male-written femme fatale types who sleep around and all that, and for some reason they're positive role models, then other times they're just adolescent fantasies. I don't get where the line is drawn.

Sorry, I'm not quite sure what you meant by this; could you please clarify?

> I don't get where the line is drawn.

Putting aside the fact that the line is drawn by individuals with very varied opinions and tastes in characters and so on, I think that it's objectification pretty clearly when female characters' costumes, poses, and the way their bodies are focused on in is highly sexualized (especially in a way that the male characters in the same books are not).

Pretty good article about this here:
