It's the greatest era of all time: 1980's. You're transported back in time to the year 1986 Tokyo Japan. You are now a 15 year old Boy or Girl (You choose) and are fluent in Japanese. What will you do? Become one of the original Otaku's making their way into the new scene? Or what will you conquer 1980's Japan.

Otherwise ITT: Nostalgia 1980's Otaku scene.

Cool question, OP. I would immediately create a voluminous "zine" with the plot details of Akira and all post-Akira Japanese media. (I imagine I would be able to complete this "zine" soon after the Akira teaser was released in 1987.) The wide dissemination of this "zine" would be inevitable due to social media strategies I have developed in the present (of this timeline). Japanese media creators, in fear of reproducing plots detailed in my "zine", would come up with different plots. (I imagine Akira and all post-Akira Japanese media would be affected.) Living large on "zine" profits, I would enjoy the resultant Japanese media. Come 2013, I would return to 1986 and create a two-volumed "zine" with the plots from both two timelines, etc. Living even larger on "zine" profits, I would enjoy the resultant Japanese media, etc.

I would tell people to avoid speculating on real estate and assets right away.

After avoiding the bubble popping and learning of subsequent economic inefficiencies that are quickly dealt with, japan would become the economic and cultural superpower of the world during the 90s.

Now all of you get to learn japanese as gradeschoolers no matter where you live. The world advances even more rapidly. Otaku is seen as a sound lifeplan and investment strategy by the 2000s.

Also I'd make sure to knock up some girl and have a cute daughter that I'd train to be interested in my normal self and seek me out. That means... I'd have to do it by '94 if I wanted her to be able to move freely on her own.

Ohhh, man. To be a weeblord in the 80s you had to really want it.

I remember getting VHS tapes recorded off of Japanese television from my penpals and then having to 1. try to figure out what the fuck was being said or 2. trying to get subtitles edited onto those tapes from the supreme fart commander that worked at my local comic shop. Always yellow. Always inaccurate.

There were domestic releases sporadically, usually of extremely high quality, though. The prices were outrageous and often released on bizarre formats like LASER DISC.

You had to want to go for the gold.

No worries, mate.

It was weird back then because anime was actually getting some recognition as a legitimate art form. Major motion picture distributors were making some of the higher concept stuff and a lot of the classic OVAs from the time period available to the West by way of the exploding home video market.

Niche shows were hard to come by, though, and just like today, only a small fraction of series ever made it to an English audience.

There was an anime club that was around in my state (that I occasionally see members of at different events) who were G1 pre-internet fansubbers. They were all older than me. I was too young to actually be in the club, but I looked at these guys as gods, and tapes could be found if you were earnest in your search or were contributing raws, which I did quite a bit because of my trades with penpals in Nippon.

Back then there were no strictly anime conventions (at least not in my section of the country), but at comic and science fiction conventions you would be able to find bootlegs all the time. When the anime industry took off stateside, people frowned on the bootleggers, but at one time - they were the most reliable connections anyone had.
