You assume more naturalistic = more advanced. Which is wrong. It's above all an excessively euroscentric perspective. Japs didn't value naturalistic or lifelike depictions as much. They had atleast 1500 years of art history just the same as Europe, and that was never a current with them. There was never a push towards a naturalistic style. The reason, along with general tastes, lies with religious reasons, since the West preferred a more naturalistic style to emphasize the Bible and perfection of God's creation, which didn't apply to Japan, where a more abstract or bizarre one was preferred to convey an "otherwordly" flavour in tune with their Shinto myths.
I'm not saying the West didn't have a larger art output or more sophisticated means, but equating lifelike art with superiority or advancement is flawed and has been pretty much deprecated for the past 150 years, only in kitsch art and pleb circles this notion still persists.
