How does someone get into Touhou?
I've tried playing the games before and while I did enjoy them the text didn't render properly so I gave up on it. Now I'm thinking that it was just bad luck but I'm still feeling at a lost as to how to go about getting back into it properly. What's a good starting point? Where can you find the games?

Google.

>>What's a good starting point?
Touhou 6, 7, 8, 10, or 11.

The general consensus is that Subterranean Animism is the easiest Touhou project game for beginners.

Touhou 7: Perfect Cherry Blossom is the best game to get into. SA may be easier, but its gameplay mechanics are also a bit "weird" - not in a bad way, it's just not quite an accurate reflection on the series as a whole.

I see what you mean, but for getting used to the basic shooting mechanics, SA's easy to read bullet patterns are should get OP up to speed the fastest.

You should start with Touhou 6: Embodiment of Scarlet Devil.

No hitbox makes EoSD pretty tough for newbies.

Don't even bother. It's probably the most boring and stagnating series in all of Japanese media. Literally nothing ever happens (or can happen).

I'd try en.touhouwiki.net for things like update and language patches, and some games still have their own hoops to jump through (inserting a new font type with PoFV).
As for starting games, I think 7 and 10 are decent for different reasons, though they might also teach you bad habits, like getting used to a surplus of bombs, ect.
You could also try 11 like everyone else says.

EoSD has no hitbox display in focus without graphical modifications and could need a vsync patch, and is one of the only two games with "rank" (basically, more point items, graze, and survival = more bullets. Resets on death, reduced on missed point items and bombs). PCB has a significantly tougher "Easy Mode" than the other games while having a less steep difficulty gap between Easy and Normal. IN no longer has rank, and is also one of two titles that has spellcard practice so you can headbutt the wall until you master troublesome cards and is more accessible to newbies to the genre than the other games but doesn't necessarily hold your hand like a retarded preschooler crossing the street. PoFV is irrelevant for the most part unless you're playing PvP. MoF can lead to bad bomb spamming habits. SA also has the same bomb system as MoF, but is much tougher, along with having some really quirky options that are fun to mess around with. UFO will shit out your bones without prior top down shooting experience. TD is the only other title other than IN to have spellcard practice, but TD is much less bullet spammy (I guess some would say they're a bit gimmicky) so it doesn't transition into the other titles too well. StB/DS puts hair on your chest, and Fairy Wars has a unique mechanic that discourages aggressive dodging.

No hitbox is a good thing for newbies imo. If you can see your hitbox, you're more likely to stare at it, which is bad practice. You should learn to look ahead and just sort of feel where your hitbox should be.

Also, it's better to just throw yourself at normal for a while than to waste time in easy mode. The game and the community will mock you, and soon you will mock yourself.

I recommend IN as a starting game because of spellcard practice, personally. When you hit a skill plateu, take an StB break

No newbie has any more problems with UFO than the other games. SA is the newbie destroyer because of its significantly more difficult normal mode.
