>They're working a lot faster than that 4-5 year estimate they originally gave.

We had a lucky winter break burst of translation. It won't be that much of a difference in the long run but it will be enough to shift the span of completion more to 4 years rather than 5.

>A patch? As in we don't have to watch their shitty videos anymore?

It's been in the proof of concept stage for quite a while. But the game would always crash at some point. Gave some pointers for them to be able to work on it and they were able to work around the problem. They are keeping both formats but yes, you don't have to necessarily watch their videos anymore.

Can you just come out and say you're not doing it already? You can say "Family/Job/Etc" and just be done with it.

>Danganronpa

Your terrible and autistic translations of the character's titles already hint that everything else you do is going to be stupid.

Luckster? Fireballer? Heavyweight? One-Percenter? Your choices are bad. Your justifications for those choices are terrible. Just stop being autistic.

Luckster is by far the worst. That's just tragically bad. I have no hope that anything you do will be good or worthwhile.

Keyword was "convenient" as in "not involving too many hassles for the first-world donators". But let's set it aside for the moment.
In my (not really) third-world city I spend an equivalent of $350/month.
Let's say that I translate 500 lines/day or 10K lines/mo, excluding weekends.
So an average VN having 30K-40K lines will take me 3-4 months and $1000-$1400 to translate.
Frankly saying, I doubt that a single VN out of thousands that exist can gather even that amount (average monthly salary for a full-time work is around $1850 in my city) in a reasonable time.

>> No.10480118

>>10480059

First, resolution is irrelevant to size. The PSP screen is small, that much is a fact. I have to hold my PSP right up to my face to get the same effective viewable area as the monitor on my desk.

Second, the PSP screen's resolution is 480x272. Most games that are getting translated are 800x600. Modern games tend to be 1280x720. So yes, compared to the PSP, they are very high resolution.

Third, the PSP engines would have to be hacked and the scripts ported over, fonts changed and resized in a lot of cases, word wrapped, etc. A lot of work for little gain considering the PSP's small install base compared to PCs.

Why don't you learn to program and do it yourself?

>> No.10480177

>>10480118
A visual novel is not anime. You don't need huge screens and high resolutions to enjoy them. They're nice to have, but not essential.

In fact, the reason modern games are coming in 1280x720 is not because the VNs look better, but because that way they don't look shit on our huge modern displays.

>Why don't you learn to program and do it yourself?
Because I don't have to, I can just learn Japanese like I'm doing and forget about hacking shit.

I just find it a waste to forget about all those potential releases, not only from the fan-translation stand point, but from the official one. Can you imagine how much would Clannad PSP sell? Can you imagine how much it would have sold years ago?

>> No.10480213

>>10480177
>A visual novel is not anime. You don't need huge screens and high resolutions to enjoy them. They're nice to have, but not essential.

They're exactly the same as anime in that regard. No idea what you're on about. If anything, VNs benefit more than anime from high resolutions, because the art is usually much more detailed.

>In fact, the reason modern games are coming in 1280x720 is not because the VNs look better, but because that way they don't look shit on our huge modern displays.

That doesn't even make sense.

>I just find it a waste to forget about all those potential releases, not only from the fan-translation stand point, but from the official one. Can you imagine how much would Clannad PSP sell? Can you imagine how much it would have sold years ago?

How many official localizations have PSP ports? The only one I can think of offhand is KazoKei. More have Android ports than PSP ports. Also, PSP licensing costs a lot more than PC licensing.

>>10480213
>They're exactly the same as anime in that regard. No idea what you're on about. If anything, VNs benefit more than anime from high resolutions, because the art is usually much more detailed.
They're not video, so they don't look like shit on lower resolutions and loss of detail is a trade off for portability. PSP ports are just an alternative, after all. Besides, it's only really a loss for CGs, since sprites and backgrounds don't need so much detail.

>That doesn't even make sense.
Just because you didn't understand it, it doesn't mean it doesn't make sense.

I'm saying that normal resolutions VNs were just fine. The reason 1280x720 became necessary is that full-screening them on our modern displays make them look like shit, and not doing so requires you to somehow black out the rest of the screen, which might seem troublesome for most people.

Sure, bigger images are awesome and I love them, but they're not necessary to enjoy a VN. Quality of text and music are infinitely more important in my book.

>How many official localizations have PSP ports?
Which is why I'm saying it's such a waste. I'm not talking about fucking JAST and MG and all their nukige or their non-existing library, I'm talking about how some other company with a little more common sense could have licensed PSP versions of classic visual novels or anime waifu simulators, and make a killing. Or how fan translations could have reached more people than those behind a monitor all day, every day.

>> No.10480506

>>10480412

All you're saying is that low resolutions look like shit on big displays. Well, obviously. Of course VNs look okay in low resolution if it's on a tiny screen. So does anime. You just get less detail. And there's more detail to be lost in VNs than anime, so I have no idea why you're trying to make that comparison. Being animated or not makes no difference, since you notice detail more in still scenes anyway. If you had any experience with video encoding, you would know that.

That aside, there's no market for PSP ports outside of Japan, especially at this point. And it's only very recently that VN companies are even becoming open to the idea of licensing their games for the English market; economics has little to do with it.

Now, Android/iOS ports could potentially be feasible. The cost to licensees would be low compared to PSP games. Key already released an English translation of Planetarian for iOS, even.

No, sounding natural isn't important at all. As long as you can kind of guess at the intended meaning it's perfect enterprise quality. Expecting anything more than that just means you have unrealistically high standards.

Flatly, I make a significant amount of money.

If I could be assured of quality, there are a few titles that I would be willing to pay $1,000 - $2,500 to see translated.

I actually have considered hiring a translator to do one and to just give it to the community anonymously.

The problem is that the language proficiency requirements are high for both English and Japanese and that there are also conventions pretty unique to visual novels. Plus, I don't think that someone who does not genuinely like a work should translate it.

Another complicated problem is the legality. Whether you pay through a clever route or just direct, you are still providing payment. C&D is not an issue, since you could just not announce the project until ready for distribution.

C&D's are really only the result of having an online presence making the knowledge of a planned translation public.

Once the cat is out of the bag, a C&D serves no purpose since there are too many distribution sources.

MangaGamer has announced their upcoming long-awaited, high-quality titles! You can soon fork over your cash to enjoy:

-Cum on! Bukkake Ranch! ~Rear Elementals into Wet, Horny Girls~! (shitty nukige)
-Throb! The Greatest Inventions of the Sexy Era! ~Second Science Club~ (shitty nukige)
-Chou Dengeki Stryker (Dengeki Stryker, but somewhat expanded)

I am so glad I've bought so many MangaGamer VNs over the years. They're really offering the best Japan has to offer!

You can't really blame them when most people pirate their higher quality games instead of buying Companies can't run on monopoly money.

Indeed. I can understand their actions as a company.

But I'm a VN player. They went from helping the market grow by releasing good games (as opposed to JAST, who was releasing only nukige), to becoming yet another company ruining the market by releasing only porn, porn and more porn. When they started they said it was hard get people into serious VNs when 95% of official releases are sex romps, yet now they're only worsening that problem. They are no longer adding anything to the market, only further defiling it. A parasite only worsening the general situation for its own benefit. I no longer want to support them. I'd rather the company just died and made place for some new company like early MangaGamer.

>> No.10495078

When will XSEED or some other real localization groups start working with VNs? Use the all ages versions for all I care, I just hate the current state of the VN market.

They'd just drop it halfway through like with the Kiseki series.

What's wrong with the current commercial groups?

I really don't follow any of the drama, but some of the first eroge I played were localized by JAST USA, and I didn't see any sort of problem with them. I wish there were more companies like that, instead of just hobbyist fan translators.

>> No.10495099

>>10495085
High translation costs were a major factor there. Those games have huge amounts of text. IIRC they actually split up the one PSP game to multiple different translators, including one student who royally fucked up.

Of course, actual visual novels are just as bad, and even more niche than JRPGs

JAST only releases serious works when they have competition (look at their release history - each of their non-nukige releases was when they had an active competitor, and in the times when they had no competitor or the competitor wasn't doing jack shit they only released nukige). MangaGamer used to be great, but now they've gone the nukige-only route as well. Their only upcoming non-nukige releases are a Shuffle fandisk and a re-release of Dengeki Stryker (which they already released last year).

nukige sell better than serious games and have lower translation costs. what do you expect to happen?

also there are tons of problems on the "negotiating with japanese companies" end of the equation.

Actually, has MangaGamer ever confirmed since the original announcement that they'll even be releasing the latter tale? We didn't get Cartagra either, after all, so I'd say there's more than a good chance Minori just says 'nope' and ef's latter half will remain playable only through the fan translation.

How would you know whether the translation you got was a quality one? I'm not talking about something, say, that CGRascal translates -- those translations are obviously mediocre. I mean how would you know that the translator had done an adequate job with metaphor and idiom?
