I just tried touhou for the first time a few days ago (I made a thread about it here) with PCB. I haven't been able to 1CC it yet, but my most recent accomplishment was beating the first three stages all without a single life lost (on normal). Alice is pretty tough.

I know it's not a big deal to most people, but it feels good. I'm going to keep trying the stages in practice mode, I figure if I can beat most of them individually without losing a life, then I should be able to 1CC it when I play all the way through.

Shmups are probably 95% memorization, so they're much easier to get rusty at than multiplayer games.

For example, I can go for months without playing Street Fighter 4 and still win most of the matches I play online. But with a shmup, you'll have to relearn all of the very small details that you've undoubtedly forgotten.

As the special challenges go, it is quite hard to come up with original and fun-to-play ideas, since NMNBNF will run out of things to do rather fast. Which is why I'd rather include maximal grazing or pacifism or such shenanigans. Again, asking from the thread's opinion.

Stop being so dumb. First of all, ZUN obviously did not give 3xx power absurd unfocused power on purpose. It's only common sense that submissions like that wouldn't be allowed.

Secondly, any NFNB run that uses that laser is bound to suck major ass since you won't be able to get many extends because you can't PoC much if you want to stay at low power.

Of course you could stick to moderate use of the laser and only use it if a boss kills you and you only pick up 3 power but you can only do that so many times before your run will be shit anyway.

Thirdly, as the OP pointed out; it's an unsportmanlike thing to abuse a glitch to achieve better results than the ones who acknowledges it as a glitch and therefore doesn't use it. Furthermore, have you considered that maybe the OP wasn't aware of the power glitch? That might be possible.

Think a bit instead of being so nitpicky about an accidental omission in the challenge definition please.

True enough, I only did one test run just to see and avoiding the power items for the most part also lead to avoiding the point items. I could only PoC when there weren't a lot of power items on screen. This would obviously also result in a lot of faith dropping.

I tried to avoid dying and getting more than 3xx in my run and i failed miserably at both. I'd actually like to see a run that doesn't die, keeps the power at 3xx and scores over 150m. maybe i'm just retarded too

Dodonpachi Resurrection (Daifukatsu) on Xbox 360 is my first Dodonpachi game, is there any good resource for learning how to play? I can't find any, just shit like this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zU_Y1kIpg

I just don't get how to keep my hit count up. It goes up when I destroy enemies, it stays up when I laser big enemies, but sometimes when I stop hitting enemies it counts down til I hit another one, other times it disappears completely.

In most other DDP games it immediately drops unless you're in a boss fight. In DFK, it only zeros out when you have a hyper either activated or ready to activate. If your hyper bar isn't full then it'll just rapidly count down.

But, you don't actually get the points bonus from a high hit count if your hyper bar isn't full so you probably want to practice chaining with a full bar anyways.

The next day, I play like an incompetent retard, dying to the most trivial of things. This isn't just limited to STGs, it also tends to happen when I'm playing rhythm games and fighters as well.

I had the same observation with my violin playing, and a discussion with a swimmer I knew solved it in my head at least. The way I see it is that you have to be overly competent at something to be consistent at it, and you are more competent when you are not tired. If you consistently practice a game hard, i.e. an hour per day or so of focused practice, you'll get tired, both within sessions and over a longer time scale. However, you will also be improving, as you are working harder to achieve the same (or, hopefully, slightly improving) results due to your tiredness. If you then take a break, you get untired, and when you return to the task, you're way better than you thought you were and can probably play through something with good consistency.

>> No.10470393

>>10470369
No, but people I think falsely attribute more to this idea idea of genetically-coded talent than it deserves. Obviously, someone from a low income background is far less likely to solve the riemann hypothesis than someone who has had the opportunity to pursue advanced math programs all his life, and more importantly, than someone who has been told that math is an important and fun thing to learn. But with a bit more effort, the former can still become a decent mathematician. And math is way more difficult than STGs. Certainly, past experience will play some role in your reflexes and your practice methods, but anyone who is dedicated, has time, and practices properly should be able to eventually achieve whatever level of play they set their mind to.

>> No.10470426

>>10470393
Yes, often times it is over-attributed, but to completely ignore it isn't correct either, not that I'm accusing you of doing so. There is a reason why some people improve faster than others, and that's where I think the role of talent plays. It plays even more of role than "practicing properly," which I think is also over-attributed. Take a sample of people who have no/equal experience in a certain task, and force them to practice (be it stubbornly or intuitively) said task the same way. It's guaranteed that some will improve faster than others, regardless of the method of practice. In most cases, the same people will be improving faster than the rest no matter which method is applied. This can also apply in the long run in terms of reaching a long term goal. Time, practice and dedication are just 3/4 of the requirements. But I'm biased and only speaking from experience, so feel free to take my opinion with as little weight you want.

>> No.10470457

>>10470426
I too am only speaking from experience, but I am glad we can carry on this sort of discussion dispassionately. I think that an experiment as you describe would be interesting to run. The way I see it playing out is like this: if you set a bunch of people in front of EoSD, made them practice 1 hour a day, and recorded their normal mode scores after a week, obviously some would be better than others, and these same people would likely be better at any other touhou game you set in front of them under the same circumstances. However, say that you then took the worse-performing half of this group and set them in front of, say, IN, and encouraged them to spend time in practice/spell practice mode, and then took the better-performing half of the group and let them practice IN but only by playing through the game straight. After a week, I would bet that most of the people who had performed more poorly on EoSD would perform better on IN than the people in the other group.

If this result seems obvious, I intentionally made the situation really contrived to counter your statement that "some will improve faster than others, regardless of the method of practice". Also, since it is easier and more immediately gratifying to play through the game than it is to slog it out against a spell you keep failing against, many people will naturally waste their time in the main game more than they should if they desired a perfect practice regimen.

Maybe we should find a word to replace talent. There is no denying the fact that certain people improve at a faster rate than others. This is why some people need to devote their life to a single game to become a top player, while others can get comparable scores in a fraction of the time. Dodge one circle of bullets at a time. A row from the top, a row from the bottom. Repeat. Moving up through a gap in the bullets moving down can give you a little more time to align yourself to move down through bullets moving up. This line of thinking creates the little square movements that you see most players making.

Improve your field of vision. Don't run into bullets.

I'm aware of that. My problem isn't with hitting Okuu, but I thought I remembered seeing someone explain that to stay around these areas. at least, it does indeed feels a lot harder to dodge her bullets if I get too close to the mid-center, and too close to the mid-left or mid-right. And if my vertical position changes too much from the mid, I'm really screwed.

Your run isn't over until you run out of lives. If you want to continue to unlock the stage practice and or get some practice on to later stages, Go for it. But once I run out of lives I consider the run to be over a restart.

>> No.10473396

I used to do this in my first year or playing STGs and beatmania. "Restart if you lose a life before Stage 6, or if your groove gauge goes below 80%." This is the advice I followed when I talked to people who were supposedly trying to help me.

Don't do it, it will lead to severe burnout and it will make you hate the game. It's much more fun to play through the game and note the mistakes you've made to fix them in a later run. Trying to play perfect when you're clearly not a good player will only drive you insane.

I don't see anything wrong with using a continue to play out the rest of the stages. It might get a bit counter productive if the later stages are waaaay above your current skill level (or suffering super bad luck) and you're just dying and bombing all over the place. I just restart in those cases.

The fine bastard that told me that was a huge perfectionist and an elitist. And I, being the retard that I am, believed that it was the right way to play. That performing terribly and getting anything below AA rank wasn't allowed. He was being an authoritative teacher. You may resent it for the time being, but the satisfaction after the fact that you complete those tasks after all that time and effort put into it, would feel so good that any resentment would be instantly shattered. Still not the best way of going about teaching someone, but it is a legitimate and effective method.

Bombing is pretty much never ever worth it, so don't do that anymore if you are. You have to shotgun pretty much all the time since the quarks tend to fade by the time they actually reach your nucleus. Once you have momentum, you're pretty much sitting at full power all the time and wreck the screen. The later stages have so many enemies that you can get hit, fly into a crowd of them with your moment of invincibility, and get so many quarks that you're at full energy again. Also, Hard is easier than Easy since it's less crowded.

Start from the first one, try to clear them on normal or easy, find the one you like the most and grind until you can 1cc on normal, then move to your second favorite.

Or just aim to 1cc them in order. That's what I did. (except with DS).

After listening to the same few tracks several thousand times, they really tend to get annoying, especially when scoring. Sometimes I mute the music and play something else quietly in the background, or sometimes I just turn the BGM vol down. Either way, I still have to hear the sounds for proper timing and such, unless I'm playing some silly challenge runs. Then I just play some music full volume.

Quick question though, how did you get that kind of big window without everything getting all overpixelated? It looks a bit different from what the vpatch windowed does, since it overpixelates everything.

I find that that music greatly assists with my memory and timing when scoring. If the music is muted or replaced with something else, I'll occasionally find myself disoriented during a stage portion or something because I subconsciously user certain phrases of music as memory cues.
