So I've done my fair share of studying japanese, but I'm really starting to wonder when that "flow" will start to come. It feels like no matter how many kanjis, verbs and nouns I learn, and no matter how many different verb forms I learn, I feel like I'm far away from speaking the language naturally (not fluently mind you). Connecting sentences, and just generally stepping up from the rough "A is B, A is B because C" sort of japanese seems hard. What to do to overcome this barrier?

Practice and hard work. Keep working at it.

Look at Zyzz. The guy sure as hell took a lot of his time and effort to reach that well built body.

I've no intentions to stop, but it feels like learning loads of nouns and kanjis isn't really helping my japanese improve. I mean yeah having a big vocabulary is great, but it won't help me speak the language flowingly.

short answer , you have to speak with japanese people.

Most of the people who come to my wifu to learn japanese, actually just come to talk and practice there japanese with a japanese person.

There is a big difference in reading Japanese and speaking it.

So how long does it take to get to where I can actually read something like an easy manga or a game? My Japanese friend convinced me to try and learn this semester and it's taken me all week just to get the hiragana down confidently. I know it's probably a long way off but I'll get bored if I don't have something to aim for.

Try manga for kids. It has furigana on most kanjis.
