Does /jp/ play Dungeon Crawlers?

Stuff like Words Worth, Daggerfall, and Wizardry?

I know they're pretty much dead now, but I would appreciate some /jp/ related dungeon crawlers.

Was thinking about grabbing Raidy 1-2 but those aren't very good, or so I heard.

I loved combat in Daggerfall. Drawing out your attacks with the mouse like that was so fun. I wish Morrowind was more like that--everyone was too busy complaining that hits don't always count as hits (like some sort of role-playing game) but really they should have been complaining about the attack system. I think someone modded in Daggerfall-style attacks.

But if there's a second one, I feel I should play the first one. Is that one any good? And if I understand correctly, the first one is just a non-ero PSP version of a game called FINAL DRAGON CHRONICLE. Will I miss out on anything if I play that instead of the PsP version? Daggerfall sucks.

The cities are boring and lifeless, NPC's are just walking dolls who all have the same stock lines.

There are thousands of towns, but very little reason to visit any of them. They all just have the same stores, the same temples, the same guilds, and of course lots of empty houses.

There are thousands of dungeons, but exploring them is kind of boring. The combat is clunky, the treasures are mostly just the same "you found 50 gold!" or "you found some slightly better armor!" you see in every RPG. Or, occasionally you'll find a map that leads to a "secret" dungeon that's no more awesome than the dungeon you were just in. Yippee!

Oh, and did someone say "procedural generation"?

99% of the game's towns and dungeons were computer generated. Don't even expect a professional level of quality in the game's map design, you won't find it. The only people who like Daggerfall are poorfags who can't play Morrowind and Oblivion.

If I wanted to comb randomly generated dungeons for loot, I'd play Nethack, at least Nethack has a goal to look forward to.

If I wanted to explore gloomy labyrinths in 90's 3D, I'd download one of countless fan-made levels for Doom or Quake. At least those games have decent combat.

If I wanted to "roleplay" and create a story about my character in a single player game, I'd play Fallout. At least Fallout has unique NPC's and some neat dialogue trees.

If I wanted to experience the absolute worst of these three things, I'd play Daggerfall.

PSP has lots of gameplay changes. Party sizes are bigger, more events, more skills, etc. It's a decent dungeon crawler so I would recommend playing it if you have some free time since the second won't be out for 3 months.

A lot of what you're saying comes down to realism. Obviously there was laziness and limited technology (nobody has a dead end in the middle of their fucking house) but that's the kind of game it is. J. Random NPC isn't going to have zany lines about necrophilia, he's going to be a boring faggot who says the same shit as everyone else.

As for all the towns, dungeons, etc., they're randomized in the same way a roguelike would be randomized. D&D has had rules for that going back to at least AD&D2. I don't see why you're content with something like NetHack but not Daggerfall. If you need to know a room was meticulously hand placed by a human being instead of generated by a computer, then I don't think most dungeon crawlers would be your type of game to begin with.

Also this is probably copypasta and IHBT.

Lightning Warrior Raidy was pretty horrible. The only interesting part is the character interaction, but most of the game is spent wandering in featureless mazes and fighting battles that have no tactical depth: you're either high enough level and carrying enough healing potions, or you lose. But the shallow battles weren't really that bad. It was the horrible featureless mazes that made me too bored to continue.

Maybe the second and third game were better. I only tried the first game.

>> No.10298851

I tried Daggerfall recently, and I really wanted to like it, but it really failed to draw me in. Privateer's Hold was interesting enough, but after that, as I traveled to the first city, tried talking to people, visiting houses and doing side quests and guild quests, I just started feeling more and more like I was playing an empty shell of a game rather than a real game. NPCs are completely indistinguishable from each other since they have exactly the same dialogue, houses and shops are almost identical except that they come from different templates, guild quests are randomly generated and thus feel completely pointless, and I'm not particularly fond of getting lost in a huge randomly generated dungeon just to finish a low level fetch quest that rewards me with 230 gold.

I want to finish it before I start Morrowind, but I really struggle finding any desire to play it any more when it's so unengaging.

In either case, my most favourite element of the EO games are the customizable parties and characters/classes. And the numerous number of ways of which you can build your party.

And I believe the difficulty curve and the FOEs deserves a special mention.

Personally I am rather indifferent to the mapping itself, but on the topic of what ends up on the maps, I guess the dungeon design of the levels isn't too bad.

Perhaps I should attempt extracting all of its text.

But then again, what are the odds of there being a single translator interested in something as niche as a dungeon crawler, text-light or not?

That said, I have no idea on whether or not the game is text-light or text-heavy. I could imagine either case.
Perhaps I should start with acquiring the game myself.

Though I don't know about ideal. And for some reason people tend to have something against running the same class twice or something.

>> No.10305624

>>10305600
Yes, mostly because variety helps. Different classes have access to different buffs, ailments, binds and healing/map skills. It's fine to have 2 pure damage dealers of the same type, preferably with different builds/weapon types. But having 2 buffers of the same type isn't too useful.

But you can get by with almost any party. People do challenge runs all the time.

EO1 is by far the least balanced though and the difference between the bad and good skills tends to be gamebreakingly large. Liking it a lot, although story is only decent I still like it as I like the theme and am sucker for the whole machina chronicle setting, also gameplay is addicting and actually challenging, also doing chaos route first so somewhat limited character selection can make some bosses fuck hard.

>> No.10423719

The gameplay is decent. Getting good equipments and enchanting is actually quite a bit of fun. Although it feels unnecessary to force the players to purify pillars (found in certain dungeons) regularly to prevent the monsters from being over-leveled, when those who want a challenge can just play hard (or very hard after the first play-through) mode instead.

The story on the other hand, is utterly horrible. It's like the writers just went for every trite scenario they could think of. The MC is stereotypically and frustratingly hot-headed and simple-minded. Most of the characters are dull and annoyingly generic. The Chaos route doesn't feel like one at all, and the Law route is just a big storm of cliches. The main theme of "I'll protect my family no matter the costs" is poorly thought-out and executed. It would have been much better had the story not taken itself so seriously.

tl;dr a poor man's Etrian with a laughably bad story that is laden with cheesy dialogues, predictable scenarios, and a cast of unengaging characters who look like they came right out of a Fire Emblem game

>> No.10423723

How much would you seriously have to grind to start off on hard mode though? The first battles are 18+ when you are level 4.
Even spamming line guard and hard edge you'll barely scrap through one mob. 3 is game over.

>> No.10425238

>>10424897
For anyone interested, they fixed this in 1.02. The level grind is way more lenient now for hard (no idea on normal or hard). Most people are probably pretty far into their normal mode saves by now.

>> No.10425893

>>10425238
Starting hard mode straight off is still suicidal. For example the first few bosses can one shot anyone in your front line with a critical even under weapon break with aegis+line guard up unless you got really lucky with (or scummed) some beastly armor drops and stack it on one character to do taunt.

>>10424897
I wouldn't recommend start on hard on your first playthrough. Grind your way up in normal mode and try to max out your guild ranks so you can get really decent drops for enchanting, which is really vital to winning. On very hard, the Law route final boss was at about level 140 with a low pillar pollution. A party around the same level with good gears should be able to take him out without too much trouble.

There's a crazy mode (level cap 200, guild rank cap 13) after beating very hard, but it seems like you can't change the difficulty once you pick crazy, not even in the subsequent playthroughs. The game also provides the option to completely skip the RPG part after finishing the two routes. Really useful for CG collection.

There are a fair number of people who liked the story in Unchained blades. As for the being able to read part it varies depending on the game.
In general simple stuff like EO or direct Wizardry clones you don't need to know any Japanese, but good luck pulling that off in crawlers that are primarily puzzle/lore based if you can't read Japanese at all.
