To be able to gain the privilege of gatekeeper, to choose what other people will be able to read in English is suffering because of the heavy thankless work. No matter what you do people will criticize you. Where's Baldr Sky? Why didn't you do [insert supposedly "kamige" title]? Why are you so slow? etc etc.

I don't translate, because when I read something in japanese, it's kinda like my mind gets the gist of the idea, but I still can't pass that whole thing to another language. It feels like something is being done just wrong. The naturality goes away.

IMO you should keep your translation to yourself and not give it to anyone. The people who rely on translations are worthless scum who will berate translators for their hard work and criticize minute details, while they themselves have no understanding of the language and must beg for you to put in the work that you do. Helping them isn't worth it, so please don't do it.

The target market of these companies is Japanese buyers. A few extra sales to some people outside of Japan isn't going to make or break them. And most of the scum you're translating for will never buy a VN, so it's not relevant anyway. The people who can influence a company's success aren't Japanese people.

Well, I've done official translations before, which took off. So. I mean. It happens sometimes. It's not really on the translation so much as availability and quality of the game.

What would be the best untranslated VN to read to really make english only people jealous? I know Muramasa is a popular one for this but I'm curious on other, more recent responses.

The best thing to do is to say that you're going to translate it, then release bits of it every so often, like on a regular schedule, so it looks like you're gradually working through it. Then after you've done about 1/4 to 1/3 of the game, just stop updating and don't release anymore. That way they can get excited and then be let down.
