Hello /jp/. Could anyone familiar with GNU/Linux help me out here? I'm trying to play the PC-98 games through TI-Next in Wine, but there seems to be an audio lag of more than a second. Can anyone help me with this? Anex 86 sucks so I won't use that.

DOSBox almost supports it, but not quite. Which is why emulators like Anex 86 (shit) and TI-Next (sound lag, but I know there's a way around it, and that's what I'm asking) that emulate DOS but specifically for the Japanese PC-98.

You can't get rid of the bloat, but the thing is, it really doesn't matter, because windows in most cases works better with your hardware than linux, because the hardware is designed with windows users in mind. Linux drivers come after the fact with neckbears (god bless them) writing them to work with the hardware.

>> No.10388869

To anyone with any levels of technical knowledge, it makes a pretty big difference. You can virtualize almost any operating system or program (with a program it's more of sandboxing though) if the binaries were compiled to run on the same processor species, but you can emulate almost any binary for an unsupported processor as long as the host machine has significantly more RAM and processing power.

A virtualizer simply places required libraries, etc in reach of the Windows program. For example, Touhou games, upon initialization, call for d3dx9_33.dll, which is required DirectX. Although Linux supports this kind of input that DirectX assists, the Touhou executable does not know this, and if it doesn't find DirectX, it won't run. So Wine creates a fake environment where the program will "believe" it's running under Windows, so when it calls for d3dx9_33.dll, it'll find it.

>>10388822
>it has emulation features
No, it doesn't. Emulation is a very specific thing, and involves very low-level "emulation" of processor instructions. For example, an x86 processor not have a hardware-method (with opcodes) to find the square root of a number, whereas ARM might (in reality, both have this ability but I'm just throwing out an example). So an emulator that emulates ARM on x86 would use supported instructions and take the long route to finding a square root. This is much slower, but it still reliably calculates what's needed. Fairly bad example, I know, but just check Wikipedia, it might have a better analogy.

I don't know much about how DOSBox works, but from what I read on Wikipedia, it emulates other hardware as well (and BIOS interrupts, sound hardware, etc). So yes, it is an emulator.

You'll probably have to switch back to Anex 86. Although Anex 86 doesn't have that good of sound either (T98-Next has very good sound though).

Yeah, that's a Japanese thing.

You certainly wouldn't see C3PO saying "Sir, the possibility of successfully navigating an asteroid field is approximately 3,720 to 1" or a guy in a World of Warcraft parody video saying "Uhhh.. yeah, gimme a sec... I got out of bed just to type this.

Emulating functions is not the only thing an emulator does. Definition:
>In computing, an emulator is hardware or software or both that duplicates (or emulates) the functions of a first computer system (the guest) in a different second computer system (the host), so that the emulated behavior closely resembles the behavior of the real system.

The main thing of an emulator is that it runs a small "sandbox" virtual machine. In VMware for example, you create a virtual machine: it has a virtual CPU, a virtual sound card, a virtual hard disk, a virtual RAM, and everything runs "inside" that virtual machine, and everything gets emulated separate from the host machine. That's why they always test security issues in a virtual machine, so a virus doesn't fuck up your host machine. Even if you're creating a x86 virtual machine in an x86 machine, it's still a "separate" machine. DOSBox does this too.

Wine, in contrast, just translates Windows system calls to system calls that Linux understands. It doesn't spawn a separate machine, it just "translates Windows code to Linux code" the best way it can, and if it can't translate some stuff, the program will work like shit or even crash. But the Windows program is still literally running on your machine. And that's why if you run a destructive Windows virus in Wine it can still fuck your Linux machine.

>Wine is not an emulator.

In a broad English sense, Wine is clearly a thing that emulates something else.

Certainly, it doesn't have a software simulation of an x86 processor, but unless you think that someone is under a misimpression regarding that matter there is no reason to dispute the appropriateness of the word. The important thing isn't a label, it's what the label denotes.

>>10395938
>But it can run on x86 systems, right? Wouldn't it not be an emulator on those?

There's no reason why you could not run a simulation of an x86 processor on an x86 processor.

>> No.10396016

>and everything gets emulated separate from the host machine
THAT IS WRONG. Virtualization != emulation.
>And that's why if you run a destructive Windows virus in Wine it can still fuck your Linux machine.
It can't do much damage, especially if /home/user/.wine/dosdevices/z: is not present. And if you create a Wine user and group and configure it securely, it can do even less damage.

I know that, but my point is that the typical emulator does virtualization, be it ePSXe, NO$GMB, DOSbox, or whatever.

>It can't do much damage, especially if /home/user/.wine/dosdevices/z: is not present. And if you create a Wine user and group and configure it securely, it can do even less damage.
You're right, but my point is that the code is running on your machine as it is.

>> No.10396047

It's emulating the CPU regardless of what system you're running it on. It's probably necessary to tie in with all the other pieces that have to be emulated (I/O devices, memory segmentation, etc) but it's also great for portability. You can run DOSBox on a pure 64-bit system for example.

>> No.10396095

Well of course. If it were to use software to emulate every single instruction and operation, it would be exceedingly slow.

Not OP and using Win7.
np21nt.exe, the only one that seems to work, runs 2hu#2 at consistent 56FPS. Probably just my crappy laptop. Either way, it sounds nice and appears to have enough options. Even at sub-max FPS, there's no chopping or ugly sounds, no noticeable delay, and no problems as far as I hear.
