Decoding a line should be instant. The process that takes time is writing the new line in fluent, natural English.

Japanese does not map 1:1 into English; in some cases, you may have to spend up to 30 minutes brainstorming to find a working solution for a tricky pun, for example.

I have been silently working on my own on something, and I guess I'm not fluent to speed through a translation like that, but I use a thesaurus in English to try and convey the actual meaning behind certain sentences. I spend more than just a minute trying to phrase it in a nice way in English and not just directly translating either though.

Well, that's one of the reasons why I work silently, that way I can't get discouraged by the truth that I'm just slow.

The vast majority of Japanese lines require significant rewriting and rephrasing to work in English. Simply parsing the meaning is not the same thing as having a translation. The WORK of translation is writing the new line. The pun was an extreme example.

People who translate for the United Nations have master's degrees in the language they're translating, and get paid to do it. Actually, united nations addresses are usually

a) prepared in advance with texts distributed
or
b) use a limited vocabulary of stiff polite, political language that is actually quite easy to translate

When successful, it is like transplanted plants growing in ways never imagined before."

Can you please explain to me what's wrong with that translation? Sure, it's a very literal, direct translation (probably of something like "そう言われても"), but in some cases it fits fairly well. Why would you spend more time coming up with something that sounds more literary, but distorts the meaning more? The only case I can see where that would make sense is if a character has a specific speaking style that you want to keep consistent.

50 lines/hour is about average for me, actually. But you're making a serious mistake in using this as a unit of measurement anyway. Writing density varies wildly depending on the game.

For example:

We'd now spent a solid week "shipwrecked." Naturally, no one was running around like chickens with their head cut off anymore―
Our lives had taken on the repetitive, colorless quality of a long-running television show that's decayed into a pale imitation of its former self. The kind you keep watching every week out of sheer inertia.
Although we were thoroughly sick of eating, or even looking at, the vile plant soup that had become our primary sustenance, its proportion of our diet was only rising; the amount of rice distributed to us was decreasing steadily with each passing day―
And even the edible grasses that had seemed so infinitely abundant at first were vanishing with alarming swiftness from the picked-over areas near the entrance to the forest.

Things like that are the exception and far from the rule, especially most dialogue.
The exact opposite is far more common in VNs than wall to wall text. For every chunk like that, there are easily two or three like:

……
………
ふう…。

>> No.10323389

>>10323348
No, that actually really depends on the game. Amane's route has a very long NVL sequence with tons of narration like that. And lots of Grisaia dialogue has multiple sentences in one "line."

Look at Oretsuba, 3.77 MB with 58396 lines, and Concerto Note, 2.03 MB with 85828 lines. (Grisaia's in the middle with 66715 / 3.73)

>> No.10323405

>>10323389
MB is often also an overcount too. If you've looked at scripts, you should know how shitty Japanese are at organizing things well. It's common for scenes shared between routes to exist in both sets of scripts instead of having a variable to direct the game flow correctly. Yu-No is a massive transgressor as far as that goes, with I believe nearly a quarter of the script being duplicated.
Many, such as all Alicesoft games, also have entire copies of every scene in the gallery so they can be called independent from the game itself.

MB is indeed probably a more accurate way than lines, but neither are very accurate for comparison between different games and engines.

I actually don't mind reading translations like 'even if you say that', 'it can't be helped', and so on. If you read enough VNs and watch enough anime, it starts to feel natural enough to be almost indistinguishable from normal English.

Except for 'puppet with its strings cut'. Seriously people, STOP USING THAT, it sounds really awkward in English and makes me laugh every time it occurs in a serious scene.

Not to me. 'It can't be helped' sounds like a decent equivalent of 'We [or anyone else] can't help it', and 'Even if you say that, ...' sounds like a decent equivalent of 'While I do agree what you're saying, ...'. 'Like a puppet with its strings cut', on the other hand, is an overly specific description with nothing in English coming even remotely close to it.

>> No.10323790

Just because you've internalized the meaning of the Japanese phrase doesn't make it any less shitty a translation. It's not that hard to come up with something like "Easy for you to say..." or whatever depending on context.

Puppet with its strings cut I don't get the issue. As long as it's well worded, it's a clear visual metaphor along the lines of "flopping like a fish out of water" or something.

>Which projects will be finished?
- Comyu, end of the year (Ixrec did Rewrite in less than a year and it was longer)
- Danganronpa, first quarter 2013
- Fortune Arterial, end of the year
- Grisaia no Kajitsu, summer or shortly after
- Higanbana 2, fall
- Irotoridori no Sekai, first quarter 2013
- Killer Queen, since it's very short
- Little Busters EX, hopefully end of the year
- Majikoi S, and maybe Majikoi if the guys at Wairu are willing to pick up where TakaJun stalled it (we'll probably never see a 100% tled Majikoi otherwise)
- Mahoutsukai no Yoru, end of the wor... year
- Rance 4
- Rewrite, this month or early february at the latest (GODSPEED IXREC)
- Rose Guns Days‬ - Season 1, first quarter
- Shinigami no Kiss wa Wakare no Aji, first quarter
- SubaHibi, end of the year (that, or Kirby drops it like he dropped out of school. 50/50 chance)
- SonaHana 9, first quarter
- White Album 2 Introductory Chapter, late summer (I doubt it'll be a "translation", though)
- Yandere, first quarter
- Yoakemae Yori Ruriiro Na, because I believe in miracles
- Yosuga no Sora, end of the year

I deliberately omitted games like Amaenbo or Hadaka Shitsuji because, well, let's say a very limited number of people care about those.

>Which will flame out?
- Baldr Sky (easiest one to predict - no further comment)
- Cartagra (KnS didn't sell > IG doesn't care about MG > translation lost forever)
- Kud Wafter (not like anyone will miss it... and the translator knows that)
- Majikoi, if WT doesn't pick it up
- Rance 6
- Rance Quest
- Welcome to Pia Carrot 2

>What is the aroduc's dark secret?
- Himegari. No solid guess about his second project though.

>SubaHibi, end of the year (that, or Kirby drops it like he dropped out of school. 50/50 chance)
I think he'll finish it, but when he'll finish it will depend on if he tries to stick his fingers in any more pies between now and then.

>No solid guess about his second project though.
I thought we already established that it was Soukoku no Arterial ("was" being the operative keyword there).

Your list seems pretty reasonable, though. I will add:
>Which will flame out?
- Aiyoku no Eustia. Well, they'll probably claim they're still working on it, but I kind of doubt it will ever be released.
- Da Capo 3. Aaeru seems to be dead again. Not that she or her "translation" will be missed.
- There are several projects up there that are effectively dead already (when was the last time KoiTate was updated?).

I also don't think IroSeka will be done in Q1. Q2 if we're lucky.

Where is dra koi? hes doiong that before Comyu and it wont take him till the end of the year for that, it will be out in like a couple of moths easy. dra koi is only 0.13 mb and Comyu is a lot shorter. ixerc will be back with his godly speed again.

Last thing I heard was that his computer couldn't even run it. I'm not up-to-date on that.

>There are several projects up there that are effectively dead already (when was the last time KoiTate was updated?).
Actually, I've been following the KoiTate project since the first patch, and I'm pretty sure they will complete it someday. It's very, very slow, and given their English skills they're in dire need of a competent editor, but I don't think they will drop it. They seem fairly enthusiastic about their site, and periodically post translations for other stuff. They just take it easy I guess.

To drop a project like that and without admitting it doesn't seem like Taka-Jun.

I mean, no matter if it's stalled or not, I wouldn't doubt Taka-Jun sticking with the project until it's done. At the very least up until he claims otherwise.
I get the feeling that he is a persistent fella. If occasionally stalling things is how he keeps said persistence alive, then so be it. At least it ends with the huge projects done.
