How do I get into Touhou?
These games don't really have a story to them.
I heard some of you don't even play them

Can't go on Danbooru without seeing Touhou.

Play the games in order from 6 to 13.
Read the entire wiki after that to understand the plot and the characters.
Read it again.

And then you just browse the internet for random doujinshis, games and music.

I don't know shit about the touhou universe, but play the games for the gameplay. The games themselves have no story.

Best tip I can give is keep at it and play at a harder difficulty than you can manage until you get comfortable. Thereafter reduce the difficulty and breeze through normal.

Also keep at it every day, improvement is slow.

I still don't understand why people keep saying this.

I must say I enjoyed playing most games for the story, as lighthearted and senseless as they might be.

If you ask me, I'd say Touhou is the best slice-of-life story with the better character designs I've ever seen.

Like I said, there's hardly any story aside from a statement or two before you fight the boss of the level.
For example the threads on /jp/ like, "Isn't it ironic that her body is as tough as diamonds when she a masochist?"etc. etc.
How would you know these things? Why is there such a huge fanbase following each of these characters.
If that makes any sense.

...each game has a prologue that explains the current incident, character descriptions, extra story, and endings, that build the plot of each game.

If you ignore all that and go by in-game dialogue alone, sure you miss most of the goddamn story.

a) I don't like danmaku games
b) It's too damned hard for a stupid American like me

However, I love the art. The fan art done for these games is what makes me love the characters so much. Some of the greatest talent in the world goes into the fanart for them.

If you want to learn more about the characters and enjoy some laid back endings, go play Phantasmagoria of Flower View.

Does anyone happen to have that /jp/ synopsis of the touhou games, and would you be willing to post them? They were basically a single sentence about how the player went around fucking things up for others. IIRC the synopsis for Scarlet Devil Mansion went something like:

>Alice puts a little vampire girl and her maid under house arrest.

They're all pretty much like that.

I know this won't be a very popular comment, but reading derivative doujins really helps visualizing the story better.
I remember playing SA when it came out and thinking the storyline was random nonsense, now that I can understand the plot better Koishi and Satori are probably my favorite Touhous.

Just keep in mind the author was drunk when he wrote all of this.

If you need to ask someone else why X is so good, then you're doing it wrong. Grow some standards and try things by yourself. Asking other people about your likings is not the smartest thing to do and you know it.

A : Why are fighting games so good? I've just been playing against others, the pattern is constant, win, lose, win, lose.
B: Well, for me I feel they're the epitome of a competition between you and another. Rather than ducking and hiding, playing a game of who can shoot the other first(opinion). It also can require some strategy and technique, hence the training modes that exist in most, if that makes sense.
A: Ahh, I didn't think of it like that.
B: Ha! Yeah you didn't !
A and B: *highfive*

Although I do partially agree with you it's also good to explore the perspectives and reasoning of the other. Rather than just flat out going "fuck dat shit"

This thread is so secondary it's unreal.
I bet the majority of you who are saying "Touhou has no story" or "I don't see the point in Touhou" haven't even played the games, or at the very least have only played through the first few levels of (the poorly translated) EotSD and couldn't 1cc the whole thing.

Why don't you all just fuck off and leave touhou alone if you don't like it?

that's it, a nice slice of life to appreciate calmly, between furious colorfull pattern. The story is really one of the central point of touhou in my opinion, that's why i think ZUN has made it so relaxing... and that's why i really hate all doujin and the fanbase which spoil the core of each character and trample over ZUN's work, although i might admit some draw well, so fan-art are ok, but the fan-made stories are just prism-distorded Gensokyo description through author's viewpoint.

No gameplay ? you have obviously not played many STG, or only manic... it has a very particular feeling to it and allows to feel quite relaxed while avoiding a monstruous ball-wall... some other manic are the real deal though, touhou is surely not somethingto spit at concerning the gameplay.

I advice you to start with either the 6th or the first (though it's a completely different genre), The 6th for windows game is the best to begin with due to the fact that with basic gameplay, you learn the feeling and behaviour to adopt to a much wider range of situation compared to getting used to some special mechanics
